I just got one of my gold coins. Can someone please confirm that if I open the box, but not the capsule, that I will still be able to submit it to pcs for the special label? I am a little confused by the website's submission description. Thanks

I still drink cheap beer. It allows me to put more cash into coins.

Posted on this thread earlier. As promised, here are some pics of my 6 coin set. The coins are really quite pretty :) The set overall is an amazing piece of Canadian history which I'm now proud to own. Enjoy!! http://m.flickr.com/#/photos/79542274@N08/

Very nice - I was interested to see the box mostly. Gives me an idea on how to make one for my 'HS' set. Can you tell me what kind of wood is used? Looks more like oak than maple.

Schultz24 The coin comes in a plastic capsule that has 2 hologram stickers on the rim of the capsule. Opening the box should be fine as long as you don't remove or tamper with the stickers. I don't think there's any way to tell if the box has been opened.

I got a reply from the mint. "Thank you for contacting the Royal Canadian Mint. With regards to your inquiry, please note that we have no information on the melting of the 1912-1914 gold coins. This is a one time situation and will not be isuing these coins again."

Perhaps if enough of us inquire about the melting of these coins and the numbers, we will get solid answers.

JohnRandal Thanks for pictures! That's a beautiful set you got. Please explain more about the coin bag, was this to hold the box?

@Hoop10,
The canvas bag in the photo was the actual bag that held the gold coins nearly 100 years ago.

@Coinsplus
That is correct. It's an original coin bag & tag used by the mint to store the hoard coins. Really cool Canadian artifact and an excellent compliment to the set.

Personally I think its a sin to melt 100 year old gold coins period...Take the case of the 1915 Austrian Gold ducat or the 1907 Gold French Rooster.. or the 1945 Dos Pesos Mexico gold ..these coins are still readily available for bullion price because they kept minting them long after the dates had expired! In the case of the 1915 Austrian Ducat they still produce them!.......The RCM SHOULD HAVE RELEASED THE WHOLE LOT and let the market sort itself out But having said that......The RCM have now painted themselves into a corner and they must start melting them soon. The sooner the better because they have predicated this whole 30,000 release on their word that they would melt the batch and have taken 2 or 3 years to think about it and make it happen...so I dont understand the members who are speculating otherwise ...BUT....The longer they wait to melt the chances grow of escapees and that could create a condition similar to the USA 1933 gold eagles which were supposed to be melted and escaped and are now the subject of a many years standing legal wrangle over whether they should be melted....even tho theyre worth a cool million each

IMO....The mint has strong prediciton that the price of gold is going to drastically go down.....Therefor they made a few bucks by selling these coins.....
