Not sure if you're responding to me RoyalSilver, but I didn't suggest that the mint followed a true grading scale.

That said, I'd be willing to suggest that the staff used by the RCM to select these coins have some knowledge (maybe even more than you or I) of coins and numismatics.

The RCM couldn't put specific grades on these coins because they are not a TPG service. In order to sell specific grades, they would had to send these 30k to be graded - expensive and not practical. But clearly, they used a grading scale to sort the coins other than 'shiny' or less 'shiny'.

Again, nothing posted (by anyone) here about coin grades is anything but a guess until the coins are graded by a TPG.

@SA4H
I would pick 1914 hand select. It doesn't really matter as both will probably be worth near melt value once they are released unless they are MS-63+. Below that they aren't really worth much more than melt right now and there's apparently around 6000 of the 1913 for sale and 10000 of the 1914 $10 hand select. Don't know about the premium but total of 1913-1914 $10 is 4869. It's not the greatest deal for Canadians since with taxes we would pay $300 above melt for a coin that will be worth around melt.

@sa4h,
That may be true, but as to a long term investment, the melt value is most likely increase. Over time, it will certainly pay the balance. If not, it's still a cool, old, gold coin to collectors. The '67 $20 gold coin is cool to. I'd love to get one of those too even if it is just worth melt now.

On that note, I should have spent the $565 on pure gold, but than I'd be a gold hoarder, not a coin collector.

What does "Hand Select" on those old gold coins mean?

An amazing close up picture of the HAND-SELECTED 1914 $5...however, looking at these NON premium coins...im thinking they would grade well bellow MS-60 :( some deep gashes on that coin, and scratches...oh well BV it is

Where can I buy coins like this, in similar condition for bullion value. I would take a few if I could find some.

I love the design of this era..... Still waiting for my CC to process and clear my payment so I have a sufficient $$ to make the purchase.... we'll see what will still be available on Monday/Tuesday.

At least I don't have to pay the VAT/Taxes.

@RoyalSilver
You need to include the username/password into the link for the images, otherwise you have to manually log onto the server every time. See how I structured the link on the previous page. It goes like this ftp://username:password@ftp.site.com.

@SA4H
You're very lucky not to pay taxes. If that was the case for me I would've bought the 1914 $5 instantly and I'm sure others see it the same. As usual us Canadians pay more for our own products than everyone else

@RoyalSilver... If I am reading the link you posted correctly, that auction you quoted was ended on 31 July 2007 when gold was just about 670/oz, so the spot price for a quarter oz is about 170$, this auction you pointed out ended at $460, so it is way over spot price, which I would be very happy if my coin would worth that much. Am I missing something?

I apologize, I did not see the date of the auction. My mistake. However looking at the pictures of the coins, looks to me like they will be low MS or most likely AU50-55. Hopefully the trends wont get affected THAT much. :)

@RoyalSilver... no need to apologize. I also think that the market price will trend down after this sales by the Mint.

For someone like me who don't know much about coin grading, and considered that the coins are already 100 years old, older than anything I own, they look absolutely awesome (to me at least) in those photos. I am really looking forward to receive mine. Hope the Mint can ship them on time so that I can spend the last few days of my Christmas/New Year vacation to admire them.

If anyone else can find one of these coins currently selling for bullion value please post. I would love to see it and buy it.
