I found this 1968 S half dollar proof coin in my grandfather's collection. I was wondering if anyone had thoughts about this coin as I did not grade it, nor was I there when he got it graded. If the resolution is bad, I will try to get a better picture tomorrow.

That's a very nice, strong cameo, JFK half!

Do you think it would be worth having it graded by PCGS?

Nice cameo, much better than mine. Hard to speculate on grade or grad-ability but it looks great.

Very nice! Quote: I was wondering if anyone had thoughts about this coin as I did not grade it, nor was I there when he got it graded. I do not see a grade on the coin. Remember, proof is a process, not a grade. A grade for a proof starts at PF-70 and goes down from there.

Leave it in the 2x2, its hard to tell from the picture but what you have is a nice proof and probably a cameo.

The coin would probably have to grade around a PR-68/69 Deep Cameo to be worth getting it graded. Like a few others have said, I would just enjoy it as is.

Cameos are not a given with 1968 proof sets, although Kennedy half dollars tend to be the most common of the group to get a cameo designation. If the coin was a PR68 or PR69 with a Cameo designation- you have a coin that would sell at auction for $20 to $30 based on eye appeal. This, I'm afraid is the a little beyond upper limit for the coin based on my guess on the surface condition of your coin taking into account the less than ideal photos. I recently wrote an article that will be published later in the month or in early December at CoinWeek that talks about a great coin from the 1968 proof set that is well worth a look- and that's the 1968-S Proof quarter in deep cameo. Very uncommon coin that could potentially return huge profits for the collector that finds it lying around.
