I got new snowboarding gear and my wife got this camera. However, I get to use it for coins, hehehe. Anyone have this camera? Do I need a certain lens to get macro photos? I'm a total noob at taking photos.

The Canon Rebel series has a macro function on it that is quite good all by itself......Sure the camera can be fitted with expensive lenses, or others such as I use older lenses with adapters to mount them onto the camera....Without spending any one I would first recommend!..getting to know your camera......Things lit the metering, say spot, for coins, the apature for the rated lens which can be learned and understood by reviewing any lens you have just google it up, the native canon is good at F5.6 and 8...
Lighting, Sun or and bulb type represents basically good color representation of your object or the unseen color of the bulbs inherent over shadow from its particular light spectrum.......A simple example is under normal 100W bulb a yellow tint to your picture can be seen more than the coins true color or appearance... with the tungsten setting if your not using a true tungsten blue the picture will have a blue hue over all hue to it....Shutter speed affects the over all, Combination of the effects.....
it just takes some practice...its not all that hard..From your beginnings you will get nice results that will improve as you go....Its a great camera!!
And there is a ton of threads on how to take nice photo's here at this site... you may have ro research back a while... but there definately many a thread on how to take better pictures...Its where I started...

The T3i is similar to the T2i I use, so you can follow all the Canon discussions and benefit from them. What lens came with the camera? If it's the 18-55 kit lens it will work to start with for coins but won't give the best results as it is not a macro lens so can't focus close enough. First thing you will need is a small tripod or a copy stand to hold the camera steady while you take the pics. Second thing is to install the EOS utility software and learn how to control the camera from the PC. Your camera has an excellent Live View mode that allows you to view the shot on your computer monitor while you adjust focus and exposure, and then control the shutter with your mouse. This will save you many hours and wasted shots since you can see what you are going to get before you snap the shot!

I'll have my wife play with it and then show me how to work it. I'm not all that into cameras like she is. However maybe I will be once I get some great coin photos.
It came with an 18-55 and also a 55-250. Whatever that means. lol. And I do have a tripod already from a long time ago.

I have the T1i which is two cameras older than yours but basically the same except for resolution and the video. I use a 100MM macro lens with mine but also have the same kit lens and a 50mm lens as well. I seem to use the 100mm lens a lot more with coins though
