Well...

I did own ABX in the teens years ago and sold at their highs, I owned NEM in their mid 40s and sold at their highs.

the problem with these gold companies is there's so many costs they must contend with. and also when the price of gold rises not all gold companies partake of the markets rise and of the price of gold as it rises.

To me, the gold and silver stocks are a waste of money and are as bad as airline stocks. Some gold companies, even the majors, get weighed down by mining operations in some country that decides to take the industry over, and again, that many times many gold mining and silver stocks do not keep up with the rises in the metals, many times they lag and only a handful of names really partake of a increase in the increase in PMS.

I say this from trading them and investing in them for a long time. They aren't the best place to get the most juice out of golds moves. Better are futures, owning/trading GLD/SLV, and buying proof silver and gold coins.

and yes I know a lot of folks say "Wow GLD is a scam and SLV is a scam and they aren't holding that amount of metal " blah blah blah. anything gold is risky. PERIOD.

That said, if you held a gun to my head about which gold stock to hold, I say take a look at which ones are near 52 highs and the ETFs of gold companies.

AGain, ima just saying what has worked for me and my bank account.

Yeah I think the OP meant Gold ETFs when he said paper gold, not gold mining stocks.

The only type I have is gold paper, but I tend to give the stuff away as Christmas present wrapping.
At least, this is the right time of the year for it!
And, depending who the recipient is, can have a better percentage, and more immediate return on your investment!

Noop, if it's paper it ain't gold, it's a promise just like a FRN. Physical is the only way to go.

Its an investment nothing more. It was never designed to be converted into real gold, they would have just opened up a bullion shop in that c ASE

I agree, BB, but I do find it interesting that those who own a lot of shares in the PM ETFs CAN take delivery of gold or silver bars, if they so choose... unlike those of us who might own a few hundred to a few thousand shares. Owning 100,000 or more shares definitely has its advantages.

I can't quite get my head around spending my hard earned dollars on something that probably doesn't exist and is all based on a promise by someone I don't know/trust.
A definite NO to paper gold/silver from me

With my IRA, I keep about 25% in PMs
Trade in and out of SGOL, PSLV, and CEF
I tried the gold mining stocks but they remain stale and weighted down by various factors. Many have value beyond their price, but how to realize that in profit is beyond my ken

You mean like having enough money to have that many shares

I have to say closer to a derivative than a stock

Paper PMs are ETFs with some simniliarities to stocks, but they are not stocks

Yeah, I'm too anal

Well now, theres actually a difference between ETNs and ETFs and stocks in regards to PMs.

There are tax implications, rebalacing issues, index, options and more which are used in the respective vehicles.

I have been a long time holder of GLD since its inception and also trade around it, buying/selling it short, same with SLV.

NOW, the ETFs that have a big bulk of derivatives are UGL and AGQ which are know as leveraged ETFs. but thee are and intended to be bought and sold short, not to be held.

SLV and GLD are nice investments to own. Golding mining stocks are just terrible.
