So I visited the London Coin Fair today ^^ I had a list of items that I wanted to purchase and 7 of those were banknotes...since the only banknote person there was selling high-end notes which weren't on that list my budget was free for coins! I got a fair selection of coins and when I returned home I found a tiny one that I hadn't selected in the bag with another...this is a mystery coin...help in attribution would be appreciated.

This was the most expensive coin I bought, without attribution but I am pressuming it is an Istros Moesia Drachm (Its about 18mm and is approx 6g-this is an estimate)

This Darius Siglos with incuse oblong punch was probably the purchase I am most happy with...the gentleman who sold it to me offered a tempting discount and I sat and had a chat with him.

The last coin I purchased was this silver hammered penny from HenryIII. I had to force myself to buy it, other examples were either in too poor condition or too much money this one was a happy medium. I never really took to hammered coins when I was younger and I feel my collection is missing in that department so this is a happy addition.

In summing up I would say that it was a good experience attending, and I brought back some goodies. I was surprised at the prices attached to some of the bronze romans...I expected to be able to get many more for the money but I see that these coins are better purchased online.
There was plenty of greek silver to tempt me and I found it a letdown that banknotes were not catered for (I had some cheap English ones I needed to fill gaps and had budgeted money to buy a few more substancial USA notes)
I seemed at 34 years old to be one of the youngest in the room...and aside from the guy who sold me the Darius and one dealer opposite him I found the social interactions rather awkward. (Unusual for me as I work with the public and can chat happily away with most people, perhaps they didn't want to talk with me)

Thanks Bing... I dont think I could scare anyone off with my knowledge though :P What I know could be written on the back of a postage stamp.
Maybe the London coin fair is completely different to the kind of show you go to. It seemed that it was predominantly ancient coins for sale and nearly every stall had trays of them laid out.

These are all excellent coin. While I know next to nothing about the Greek ones. The Constantine and Diocletian are in beautiful condition. Congrats on an excellent haul.

Well all I will say is wow! .... And I am missing a siglos in my life. I like yours. What did yo spend on it if you don't mind me asking? I go to the New Haven coin show here in CT. I too saw the huge age gap. It was quite funny because the door said," the young men's association". Young men- I did not see one. It really is the hobby for the older gentleman. The ancient selection is one dealer with 2 coins. I bought them both... For cheap! Don't worry Dave if you came to my town's show, you would still be older than me. :-)

Wow sums it up. What a nice haul, and I agree the few coin shows I've been to most coins Ancients or not were over priced.

I do like the Istros stater, I cant comment on authenticity they are widely faked but your looks fine to me. The Thrace hemi is one of my first coins. Yours is very nice. Again I cant comment on authenticity because I havent really seen enough. There are a lot of different types. The Siglos I want, and is pretty cool. You don't see this that often in such a good condition, usually they are warn really bad and are punch to heck with counterstamps, great haul. The small extra is a mystery and deserves its own thread, I would guess some kind of Archaic coinage of maybe Lydia? That is truly a great haul, the Romans look super and the hammered English, well like the others I love the style they are not ancient but I would still buy Kudos to you on another great haul.

The Siglos was £100 and the Istros was £110...the rest were all much cheaper. I had intended to get 5-6 roman bronzes thinking they would be around £20 each, not so...you can find decent bronzes on Vcoins (Roma numismatic has tonnes) for not much money but in that department there seemed relatively poor value.
There was however lots of Greek gold and silver which seemed more competative.
I meant to get a Byzantine too but forgot about that... maybe after christmas I will treat myself to a decent Justin and Sofia... until then I must keep out of trouble and keep hold of my cash.
The mystery coin is interesting (tiny, probably 0.2g) it seems from what is left of the flan that it is archaic (the bulls head would have been in the centre of a square) and I vaguely recognise it but I cant think where from. I was thinking Larissa...putting a search in vcoins "AR Bull" doesn't throw up anything resembling it. I guess either one of you will let me know or I will have to be patient until I stumble across another one.
