Hello all! I have spotted this coin in a "metal detecting finds" lot on ebay and I'm a bit unsure as to what it is. The coin is being sold with a few other roman objects/coins which were supposedly all found in the same field in the UK. After inspecting the sellers completed listings I don't think this person knows what they are selling. I have cropped his picture just to show the coin in comparison to the size of a old one penny. Does anyone know what it is and whether it shows any signs of it being dodgy.

From what I have learned over the past few days I'm going to guess that it is Roman Republican?

A Bactrian tetradrachm, Antimachos I'd say. Most probably a fake from the look of it

Thank you all for a quick ID, oh well that is a shame I suppose what are the chances of a ancient Greek coin being dug up in the UK.

Those ancient coins can be found anywhere in that region and as far as China. Even a London minted coin can find it's way in the middle-east for example. I can just imagine legions that get paid, moving all across ancient Europe spending coins. Not to mention travelers and merchants. I have heard of Greek coins being found in the UK.

I know of (and have bought) Roman coins minted in Emesa being found in the far west of Roman Britain.

I've seen the real Bactrian tets in museums--they are stunning! This is nothing like it.
