Its been a fabulous month for this bottom feeder. I bought this from a seller I have done business with several times before with no hiccup. Then this happened, we worked out a deal for this Carthage Billon tri-drachm SGCoP191 of Carthage, the coin pictured in the listing is no doubt the coin I received but I believe it was misattributed. The seller posted a picture of this coin and it simply looked like any run of the mill upper mid-sized bronze denomination. The coin pictured showed a brown color. The coin in hand is a wonderful sparkly grey color. I also found it very difficult to photograph. The I started poking around looking at the wildwinds SGCop 191 and this is not that coin, in fact further down the list you will find my coin, its of a slightly different type. Lorber-168! Billon Tridrachm struck 210-205 BC during the Second Punic War. HJB- states that it comes from a hoard cataloged by C.Lorber around 1997 it appears in Coin Hoards Vol. IX 2002 Punic "Horse and Palm" Billon Tridrachms by C. Lorber. The coin is described as belonging to Hannibal. $850 beans in VF. Too rich for my blood so now I have one in F which is F by me. Zeugitana. Carthage Hannibal Barca (The Scourage of Rome) Struck 210-205 BC BI Tri-drachm 25.6mm @ 10.54g Obverse: Traditional Bust of Tanit Left. Reverse: Horse Standing right Palms tree Behing (small scale type) Edited by Ancientnoob 12/01/2012 8:36 pm

In my collection of Carthage I am working up to Punic silver... well an electrum stater...I might have to work well...LONGTIME...at this rate. Neither are cheap...These Punic coins are getting crazy though. Who else has noticed that? On ebay, Vcoins and numismall its not uncommon to see near slugs sell for $50 bucks. Wild!

You have been buying some interesting pieces recently and this is sweet. Imagine what it would have looked like freshly minted? As impressive as any modern day coin.

that's another cool coin AN . you've been on a roll man. 10g, there's some meat on those old bones. so what do you mean by it was described as belonging to hannibal? like it may have been in one of his chests of coin at time?

A roll yes its been a good month! From Hannibals stash no. That would be awesome. Carthage mints are a bit iffy when you come down to it.During the second Punic War when Hannibal invaded the Italian Peninsula they faced a financial nightmare. Nearly all the gold and silver went to pay the Mercenary forces fighting the Romans in the Italian Peninsula. Most likely the debased coinage was used by the locals of the Carthaginian domain to partake in regular everyday commerce. In fact the coin was struck under Hannibal's authority, during war time. Much like the Steel pennies of the United States minted under the Authority of FDR during WW2. I wish I could elaborate more on the particulars but but as of late the baby is with Grandma and I am swimming in cheap wine. Glad you like the coin.
