well, I don't think this is a seal....probably very under weight for a seal. however, I did find an interesting byzantine seal collection online. worth a browse if you dig ancient coins...lots to look at if you really like byzantine stuff. I looked like crazy for a match to my "coin", but no luck. http://www.doaks.org/resources/sealsI'm thinking my coin is a.... 1. well done fantasy piece/tourist coin fake of some type or 2. some type of token from back in the day or 3. a piece specifically designed to drive me nuts well, considering it cost me about 3 bucks... I can't complain to much. dougsmit, do you have any opinoin on what my coin is before I let this thread rest in peace?

This is one of those pieces that when you least expect it, it's going to turn up on line or in a catalog. I wouldn't give up on it just yet. In any event you have gotten your 3 bucks worth just on what you have learned from your research.

The other option that occurs to me, if it's definitely old and definitely bronze and not lead, is a coin from one of the fringe states under Byzantine influence: Serbia, Bulgaria, Trebizond and similar places. These would be similar in style to Byzantine coins but not be listed in the Byzantine catalogues.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Well I was poking around the internet, when I saw something that seemed familiar yet not. I remembered this thread and this large unknown Jesus. I read this thread many times, and kind of gave up, becuase I am not familiar enough with these coins. So anyhoo- I found something very similar to the OP.... Check this out, maybe it helps point your guys in a new direction. http://www.numismall.com/Hungary-Be...szar-72.html

It looks curiously round, which is unusual for a Byzantine copper coin. The style looks as if it may not be byzantine, but contemporary Bulgarian or similar. I have a copy of 'Coins of Medieval Europe', by Grierson but I do not expect to find similar in that book, because I don't think it is a coin.
Perhaps a deeper look into the Dumbarton Oaks Catalogue may give a few more clues. More time and patience is needed and a challenge worth answering to our collective academic abilities may yield a satisfactory result.

The Cross on the Gospel book looks odd, I have not seen that on the "Anonymous Folles" listed by Sear, nor does he have any such examples in his book that look like that, for the rival "empire of Trebizond".
