Is the holder causing the toning? Should I take them out and put them in flips or leave them alone?

Seeing as some are toned and some are not, it makes me wonder. THis could be because they were out in at different times. I would transfer them to 2X2's, but its your choice.

That is a complex question and cannot really be answered without knowing the history of the coins.

Is this an old folder?
Do you know how long the coins have been in the folder?
What kind of environment has the folder been stored in?
Where were the coins stored and what was their appearance before being placed in the folder?

I see three different levels of toning- the standard silvery gray, golden/brownish peripheral highlights, and and dark, rusty(color, not the chemical process) blotchy toning. It is possible that the folder has toned the coins but it could be due to other causes as well.

I've seen the same sort of "toning' of Mercury, Roosevelt and Barber dimes that I had for 25 years in blue Whitman folders. They may not have been stored under ideal conditions, but the coins tarnished none the less. It seems that silver quarters and halves didn't tone as much under the same conditions, but that is only observation and certainly not scientific.

I moved my coins to 2x2's and would suggest that you consider your options for storing these Mercs.

Sorry, should have thought more about what I asked. I was just a little panicked this morning when I opened it and saw the condition they where in. This folder has been sitting in a saftey deposit box in a bank for at least 20 years until yesterday. It looks to be an very old Meghrig coin holder, no date on it and the info I looked up says they have sold numismatic supplies since 1936, so who knows. The other folders say Made by Dansco, Venice Caifornia copyright 1959 and none of the coins in any of those have toned. I'm going to put them in flips.

Thanks Bio & Pattie

Unfortunatly, that is what some album toning looks like. Some people don't know, but albums can cause a lot of damage to some coins. I personally would take them out and put them in 2x2s. Good luck with them. I'd be thankful there was no 1916 D. Merc.-Dime-Toning-Question

Well you can put them in flips and possibly stop the process ,but the coins that have toned will always be toned ,,
I see some that appear to have been cleaned/polished before being put in the folder, this was not an uncommon practice back in the day !

Those coins are the ones that have the more dramatic dark toning, the more natural coins are the golden/brown color.

Im not sure that the albums have caused the toning although it may have been exagerated by the confined space that they create,, album toning is mostly due to sulphur in the card board,, and generally speaking will cause colorful toning on silver.

This toning looks more like Humidity ,,If you want to store the coins in folder , buy new and once crossed over wrap the folder in aluminum foil for storage. By the way bank vaults are not the best environment for coins !!they are not humidity controlled .
