Just wondering how many have had luck re-submitting coins to The major TPGs (ANACS PCGS and NGC) in particular old green holders, "rattlers" and rare dates that greatly increase in value just 1 grade higher. It is my understanding that if an increase in grade of 1 point makes a big difference in the value of a coin these three TGPs will really scrutinize it for an upgrade. They say they dont look at the old grade but I dont believe it. Should you break it out and submit raw? Thaks for your input, by the way mine are an 1897 O Morgan MS 62 ANACS and an 1892 Liberty nickel MS 64 PCGS in an old "rattler" slab.

Before playing the "BREAKOUT GAME" I highly suggest you learn a "LOT" more about grading. Re-submitting is NOT for those who cannot grade and grade well. Every time you Crack Out a coin it is going to cost you $18 to $30 plus postage and Insurance per coin to re-submit to PCGS, that is after your pay to join PCGS, $99 - $199 a year. What if the just crosses, you break even BUT what if it drops a point, A BIG LOSS. Food for thought. Remember the Golden Rule, Buy the Coin - NOT the Slab.
Are you in the hobby to collect or are you just trying to make money?

I wasn't going to crack them out, I planned on doing a cross-over with a minimum grade the same as on the current holder.I'm just wondering what kind of results people have had doing this. I collect coins to make money so I can collect more coins!!

I agree with ducky1100 Learn more on grading first, and even if they come back the same grade all you have done is spend money more for no advantage.
I collect coins for the beauty and love of them not Specifically for profit, and have been told by many dealers that they make money on buying not on selling. Since both of these are top rated graders I would leave them alone until I had them checked out by several collectors and dealers to see if they should grade better.

I started building a type set 30 years ago. In 2003 I realized I had some pretty nice coins and few loved ones around that appreciated their value. I sent my best coins to Anacs and started calling it my graded type set. I now have 80 coins in the set. During this process I had sent 5 coins that were graded by Ngc, Pcgs and 1 coin from ntc. The Ntc was an 1859 Indian graded ms 64. It has sharp features, no spots or rubs and certainly no wear. I had to agree with the 64. Anacs offered au 50 details-recolored. The Ngc and Pcgs coins were offered from 1 to 3 points lower than they had. I am not trying to make money on my collection, but I am all for saving what I have. If I had a coin worth thousands I might consider checking other companies, but I see it as a waste of time and money doing it with the average coin.

It doesn't sound like you know how grading works. If I am not mistaken, you should get a copy of the ANA photographic coin standard beforehand. I think this is the one: http://www.amazon.com/Photograde-Ph...p/0307993612

If you ARE serious into making money, at least know what you are looking at. TGPs don't care what objective you have there - they just grade what they believe it is.

Roach, you first mentioned re-submitting and then cross-over, which are two very different types of submissions. So, I'm not certain which one you're talking about. In any event, whatever success or failure others might have had with their coins isn't particularly/necessarily relevant.

YOUR coins are the ones that matter. Many PCGS "rattlers" are conservatively graded, but many others are liberally graded and/or have have PVC. It is best to focus on the specific coins you have, not the holders, the grading labels or the results that other submitters have had. The best thing for you to do is to find a knowledgeable collector or dealer who will provide an informed, honest and unbiased opinion regarding whether your coins are worthy of re-submission.
