Coins are too heavy compared to current currency.

IMHO the general public will never accept the idea of replacing the current dollar bill that has been in place with its current dimensions since 1929.

You're assuming they would have a choice...

Just do it already!

crazyforATB, I believe this is correct, yes. Mexican coins go all the way up to ten pesos (in our current exchange rate, that's about 77 cents; when the peso was adjusted in the early 90s, it was about $1.21), and the Japanese system (which is so devalued it has only whole yen, a single yen being worth roughly a single US penny-plus-tenths-of) goes all the way up to a 500-yen coin (that's worth about $6 American and is the largest-value regularly-circulated coin in the modern world).

Congress has been "looking into" replacing the $1 note with a $1 coin since at least the 1970s. But until certain congressmen no longer have the Crane Paper Company in their jurisdictions, and / or no longer believe that eliminating $1 notes = less paper sold by Crane = less jobs at Crane = they get voted out at the next election, Congress will take no action on such logical, sensible reforms to the American monetary system.

With the billions that could be saved over time I don't see how this isn't part of the discussions to balance the budget. I take that back. Since it is a logical way to save money I see why they won't discuss it.

There is a side of this discussion that people don't even realize is involved in this decision. Coins are produced by the government, but currency is produced by a private bank known as the Federal Reserve. The United States government could print it's own money but doesn't. Since it doesn't the power to call the shots rests in the hands of a few powerful people who do not even have to answer to elected officials. The more money they print the more rich and powerful they get.

To replace currency with coin would cost this corrupt private bank a lot of money since the government has to borrow with interest every dollar they print. Congress doesn't go against the wishes of these powerful elites. That is why we have all of this outrageous spending and debt when it is not even necessary.

It of course makes financial sense to produce coin instead of paper, but the decision isn't about saving money. If it was the government would just print its own dollars and not have the national debt. No, this decision is about power and profit like all decisions made in this country.

It's bad enough I already have a change bowl jar bucket on my dresser filled with pennies, nickels dimes and quarters. The last thing I need are even more coins that are too heavy to carry around on a daily basis and would end up on my dresser until I get around to bringing them to a Coinstar machine.

If you have more than four dollar coins (or notes) at any given time, you are doing it wrong.

One trend I see is more and more folks using debit and credit cards due to all the cash back incentives. This in turn reduces the amount of cash / paper money / coins being used.
