Just recently got this farthing error token. This is a reverse brockage with a full strike and I would guess an early strike as the details are very good. Some one certainly took good care of this as the condition to me is incredible for a farthing that is close to being 200 years old...

The third picture is of a normal John Harrop Tea Dealer farthing that I just purchased to go along with the brockage error one..(sellers pictures) as I should be getting it soon....

extremely nice item: it'll look great next to its cousin, by way of a comparison-piece.

I wonder what the symbols on the tea-chest are intended to convey ?
I'll guess that H inside a lozenge is for Harrop, but can't even guess at the others.

Thanks Peter.. Here's what I have so far:

Obverse:
Legend on seven lines: JOHN HARROP GROCER & TEA-DEALER 1814 BRIDGE END GATESHEAD.

Reverse:
A tea chest inscribed with "HG", two Chinese characters and a British East India Co. bale-mark with legend: FINE TEAS * RAW & ROASTED COFFEE *. Plain edge.

I think you are right with the H for Harrop and I'm not 100% sure but I think the G could be for GATESHEAD. Don't know what the other symbol represents...

They're bale-marks - stamps printed on cargo to denote who carried them. The heart-with-a-4-on-top is the balemark of the British East India Company, for example. The two marks on the "front" might be local attempts to imitate Chinese characters.

Thanks for showing the dated side.

I have the same brockage (though perhaps not as sharp as yours), but I had never thought to get a normal example to go with it.

Bill ...would like to see a picture of yours. Usually there are a few strikes and possibly yours may be the 3rd -4th etc.

If your interested I know of a site that has a normal token for $20.00 British Pounds and would gladly forward a link to you. When one can find these normal ones they run around $40.00 GBP on ebay....

D -

Here is my example -

1814-Brockage-Error---John-Harrop-Tea-Dealer

I have been collecting English brockages (regal issues) and double strikes for many years. Along the way, I've gotten a few token errors*.
I admit that I haven't given much thought to 1st strikes, 3rd strikes, etc. I'll be interested in your assessment of this one.

Thank you, but I don't think I need the link that you offered, now that I've seen your piece.

All the best,
Bill

* The only other token errors here are several double struck conders.

Very nice Bill...I like

The one thing I noticed is that both errors have a rim flaw planchet. I do believe both of the brockage error tokens here are from the first few strikes with full brockage (some call it a mirror image).

With more strikes ( 4 plus) the brockage image starts to spread and becomes some what blurry...

Great find and its nice seeing another one...
