For eg. do you consider the 66 and 67 silver dollar abnormalities necessary to have completed the series. Don't get me wrong I would love to have all of them, but could never afford them. They were not issued for circulation so in my opinion should not count.

"Back Door Job"? Do you mean another job to supplement your income to acquire your "niceties"? I have had a part time job for on and off 13 years which provides me with my collection funds. We're speaking English but we are worlds apart in communication...again.

If a moderator reads this, I think 'back door job' should be added to the CCF Numismatic Glossary...

I only collect the normal ones, and ignore those errors and mules, in fact I even leave some of the key dates for my son to finish

I'll use the analogy for food for a point I'll make. If you were starving, gravy or butter certainly wouldn't be what you want to feed you. However, if you were offered a wholesome helping of roast beef, mashed potato and corn would that not be awesome. But, there's a catch, you have no gravy for the roast beef/potato and no butter for the corn, without butter and gravy, can you still eat the meal? Absolutely! Same goes with Collecting, let's say you target silver dollars from 1935 to 1967 graded MS-63-64ish, I would suggest to you to Collect the regular coins and don't worry about the varieties or Error coins (Diving Goose, Arnprior W/DB's, 1 Waterline etc.) The basic will be your meat and potato's and the varieties/error's which you can obtain after you finish the full series will be the gravy/butter! I think collecting decimals is an acquired taste. When I started collecting, I am looking for the shiny coins especially NCLT. As my collection grew, grew out of NCLT and start to look for decimals. after collecting most of the years, started to crave for all the errors and varieties as well as upgarding whatever I have. Gets more and more expensive and wonder if this addiction is going to stop.

Helpful analogy Glenzy1. I long ago realized that I would have to live vicariously off others to enjoy some of the rarities and Vickie's but am well on my way on from 1900 and up in all the decimal series. My modest silver dollar collection includes all the so called Arnprior w and w/o db and other water line varieties, the 5 65's and so on but I refuse to not consider it incomplete if I am missing the back door jobs. It's "uncommon" knowledge about the 66 bead variation that were never made for circulation and the double triple and flip struck 67's. If you got them enjoy them, probably great investments. How do others feel about back door jobs?

The only silver dollar >I WANT NOTHING TO DO WITH is the so called J.O.P. Variety! For the life of me, I can't understand how anyone can willfully deface legally Canadian currency and then have Collectors chase after it like there's no tomorrow! Glenn

Personally, I would consider my collection complete without unauthorized issues and minor varieties.

For what it's worth--I'm a very novice coin collector with a small collection and might feel differently somewhere down the road--I would certainly consider a collection complete without the "off" items. Not saying I would have zero interest in acquiring them (at a reasonable price, of course), but would not "need" them for me to consider a set to be complete.
Cheers, Rob

At least we don't have to deal with back-door restrikes.
(That means mint insider striking of a scarce date/variety once its scarcity is established, and well after the original striking runs have ended)

Definitely agree with glenzy1, the dollars stamped with JOP are but a footnote to me. Zero interest in ever acquiring or trying to acquire one.
As far as the original question of the thread, if thats your thing sure, but personally I couldnt care less for the mules and abnormalities, give me the straight dope!

IMHO, the JOP dollars are bullion coins only. I too have never understood how someone could pay a premium for a defaced coin.

There are different levels of collectors, some collect the highest grade of coin while other want the mistake coins. a collection is what you find interesting I collect decimals and branch off into NCLT and notes. RCM makes some great pieces :D

To each their own... love tokens are another form of 'defacing' that seem to be highly sought after. Hobo nickels in the US as well... I have several examples of the "GAN" counterstamp 1970 nickel dollars, my best one being MS-64. I actually like it, and I know several nickel dollar collectors who feel their collection is not complete, without it...
