Hey guys, I'm considering making my first coin purchase of over $25. With my lack of experience, I'm not good at detecting cleaned or problem coins. Can anybody tell me if this quarter has been cleaned, whizzed, or otherwise messed with? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1932-S-Wash...em1e750a0993Thanks, Casey

I see no problems. It looks original to me. Just my opinion, I am sure others will come along with a lot more experience in Washington quarters than I have.

I'm certainly not an expert, but the coin looks fine. I have dealt with this seller before and would do so again. Please keep us posted.

I am not a Washington quarter person but I will play devil's advocate since this is your first purchase over $25. Is this THE one that you want? I mean, have you looked at many in hand and online and this one grabs you? I am sure other Washington people will chime in and if you are comfortable with your decision, I am sure you will enjoy the coin!

Personally, the mintmark looks a little weird...
Possible attached mintmark

Not sure but coin looks OK to me from what I see. Of course on line anything could be worse or better pending who took the photos. Price is OK too. However, I would never buy anything over $25 on the internet myself. I'd really to see coins of that price range in person. I just don't trust anything that costly over the internet.

I am with WindChild, the mintmark looks a little strange at the bottom. I trust Just Carl's opinions though.

The coin looks genuine to me but there are many altered 1932-D,S quarters so you need to be cautious. I think it could grade around a VF-25/30. Just as a reference numismedia has this coin valued at about $120 in VF-20 and about $160 in EF-40 while Heritage shows certified examples in similar grades auctioning for around $120 though some of them don't look quite as original as this one.

I know nothing of quarters except that when I was a kid you could buy a five-pack of gum with one, but I want to second CoinAddict on the recommendation of this seller. I purchased my 1862 IHC from Coinman2000 and it actually looked better in-hand than in the photos (I purchased it knowing it was a corroded problem coin and only wanting it because it matched my budget; in hand, the corrosion turned out to be much lighter than it looked in the photo). Please keep in mind that this seller DOES auction problem coins (when doing so he usually starts 'em at a buck and lets people decide what they want to pay; he doesn't try to hide the damage, but he won't highlight it, either), so you will want to examine your coin closely before you buy.

Hello. I'm new to this fine community. Thankfully I found you when I just Googled "1857 large cent counterfeit." I've been bidding on ebay for a replacement 1857 as mine is holed. I bought it as a teenager 55 years ago, and I still love the beauty and history of Large Cents. In my bidding rush on several ending auctions, I mistakenly bid on an "1857 Large Cent TOKEN," then tried to retract my bid before the auction ended, but "Won" the auction at a price representative of an authentic coin. Thankfully the seller cancelled my transaction after my apology, but would not let me bid on his relisting at my lower bid amount, representative of exonumia IMO. Dejected, I remembered a Coin World article on Chinese counterfeit 1857 Large Cents, and began this search. In summary, the "counterfeit/TOKEN" fooled me at first viewing, is of beautiful quality, and very deceptive. In this case a thousand words are worth more than a picture. Thanks for posting on a similar auction in October!

Thanks for the welcome, jbuck. And to goldencardinal...I was not bidding on the coin you referred to - what auction venue was it on? I'd like to take a look, post-auction, if you have the time to let me know the auction number. The auction I'm referring to ends in three days in US Large Cents, and the seller refused to allow my bid, as is the seller's prerogative.

I think he was referring to mrcasey (the OP) being the winner.

After reading through the posts and confirming the numismedia price for a VF, I put in a bid of $115. The fellow came back with $140. I offered $120 and he accepted.
I'm such a newb, that even when I get the coin, I won't quite know if it is or isn't a problem coin.
Everyone is being very helpful.
Thanks, Casey

Now that you have purchased it you may consider taking additional pictures when it is in hand and posting them on the forum in a before and after thread. You may gather additional information from the knowledgeable members with different images. It is interesting to see how things compare from online to in hand.
Enjoy!
