Hey everyone,

I am not the most well versed collector and have only been collecting casually since I was a kid. This includes when I travel purchasing local current and outdated currency and coins.

After the holidays this month I will be traveling in South American (mostly Colombia) for work/study. Does anyone have advice or prior experience with collecting while traveling abroad? Or maybe something special to look for specifically?

Thanks for the help. New but learning!

Make sure you know local laws about exporting cultural property. You don't want to buy something, then, when you try to take it home, find out that there is a law against taking it out of the country. You'll be out what you paid for it, at least, and might face prosecution. Some countries ban the export of artifacts older than some age, some allow their export only with a license, and some don't have restrictions. I don't know the specific local laws in Latin America, though.

Yeah... prosecution is not what I am looking for! Thanks for that tip. Although I'm not hugely into ancients; hopefully that will keep me out of trouble. In the past I have always purchased the outdated currency only from the last 150 years or so...

It sure can't hurt to know the facts though. I will look into a few laws when entering the country.

For South American countries, the only restricted/prohibited exports are likely to be native pre-1492 artefacts. Which, naturally, does not include any coins.
