This coin is the less attractive cousin of the 1877 in my last post

I have a question regarding grading, not just for this series but in general. Scratches-- at what point is the coin considered damaged? What is the proper way to describe a coin like this? I've seen people mention "[grade] for details". Is that the proper phrasing when a coin has significant injuries but is otherwise gradable?

With that in mind, how would you describe this coin? Comparing to PCGS pictures, I think it's ~VF20, but do the gouges lower the grade or do you just say "damaged, with VF20 (or whatever) details"?

1) Age and severity of the scratches determines market acceptability. It is a case by case determination with no hard and fast rules.

2) Normally it would described as: "VF Details - Damaged" or "VF Details - Rim Damage/Scratched".

3) If a coin has significant injuries it is not gradeable for numismatic purposes. The Details remaining are noted however.

Net Grading to current market value is not often practiced these days. If it were? This coin would be Good Details to me ($15 tops).
