Hello all, First post here so bear with me. I buy storage lockers and came across my first coin that I need help finding a value to. It is an 1862 Sitting Liberty Half Dollar. I did some research and I think mine is the 103 version with the broken S stamp over the L and F. If you would please give me a grade on this coin it would be much appreciated. Also a value with the grade would be nice as I do not know much about the grading system. Thanks so much!

Interesting find, you seated liberty half has "VF" (very fine) details. It appears to have a "chop mark" on the reverse. Chop marks are common on silver coins that have circulated in the Orient. To me the chop mark is a deterrent to it's value.

to the Forum!!

I also think around a VF30 (details) grade would be appropriate.

The chop-mark is unusual for this coin type and IMO, detracts from the coin. It appears it also damaged the obverse side (delamination/deformation) on the right foot and resting rock under it when it was struck into the reverse.

The darkness around the obverse stars and reverse letters and the "spottiness" on both sides lends me to think it's been cleaned in the past.

Again, IMO, this coin is worth around $50-60.

A pretty cool coin!

Interesting coin. Chopmarked which some buyers do not discount as a problem. Small, broken "S" does seem to be the variety. There appears to be some type of damage on the obverse directly above the "2".

Details are strong VF and the value would be around $50-$60 as Moe145 noted.
