I was browsing for my friend who is putting his slabbed 7070 together and found this 1867 Shield nickel No Rays variety and wanted to see what the CCF thought. Thanks for your opinions! (sellers images)

I'm not very good at thr shields, but I'd say VF20 Used this as a guide: http://www.shieldnickels.net/anaGra...andards.htmlOtherwise CCF member dooly knew his way around the Shield nickel, but he hasn't been online for quite some time The die cracks is the fun thing about these nickels...I'm having difficulties finding one withour any cracks or Cuds or whatnot

Yes, love the very pronounced die cracks. Unless it was a light strike, I think it graded VF/XF

Its a beauty. I would go along with the VF/XF. I didn't realize that cracks were that prevalent with the Shield nickels....

I will guess EF-45 but I wouldn't be too surprised if it graded a touch higher.

Wow, we are all over the place on this grading..or mailny I'm off.
What are you guys looking at when giving it such a high grade? I look at the wear on the stars, and the vertical and horizontal lines. By those and referencing it with the link I posted, I came up with my grade...

That is why this is so tricky. I think I see a weak strike so I am the highest guess so far!

It would not surprise me to see this AU53/AU55.

PCGS thinks that it is a weak strike. I feel that it is accurate based upon the (lack of) wear on the rim to denticles, being that the rims are sharp. The shield outline and leaves are sharp. The lower stars and CENTS on the reverse is probably what is swaying peoples grading as being XF and lower. I hope that I can get this one! I like the die cracks as well!

I had decided on an AU-50 when I scrolled down and saw the PCGS grade of AU-55. Nice! Sweet example of a cool coin design!! And I love the die cracks too!

I agree with weak strike - while I was at AU58, I am not surprised it is AU55.
