So I found out my dad does it and he lives in Florida(well retired there). Do any of you do it? I was wounder if it has turned up any fruitful finds. I asked him to do it for me, so I can expand on my collection

Here was my first find... Since then about 10 more large cents (not as nice as this one) and a few silver dimes & quarters... The photo does this coin no justice.. It's soooo much nicer in person, not pitted as the photos show.. Aside from the scratch under the ear it's flawless... And the verdigris on the top right star has since been removed, that photo was right after coming out of the ground. My buddy finds old large cents weekly... Has found some very nice silvers too, I think he got $150 for his nicest quarter (Early Standing lib, I don't remember the date) It can definitely be rewarding... Even if not coins... Rings & such are found on beaches probably every day.. Who knows.. Could find some hoard buried 100's of years ago... Just takes time and patience... But there's nothing like finding a coin like this to make your day!!

For good places to detect try to find old maps of the area your looking in, ex.. Where old sidewalks used to be (beside the old sidewalk and road is always good, even new sidewalk and road), old buildings/cellar holes (but usually outside of the hole, not in it), old meeting places (dances, town meetings, markets, etc), where old schools used to be... Around large trees, under bushes around old houses, old routes that military has marched way back when (my area the Lafayette trail). Anywhere there doing construction and digging up the dirt might bring things closer to the surface.. And there are plenty of newer spots to check too... Anywhere there were people there were lost items... I'm sure more people know WAY more than I do... Someone will give you some better ideas...

Any place that people have gathered over the years are good spots to detect. My personal favorites are "hunted out" parks. Trashy old spots that can be frustrating to other detectorists. Old fairgrounds. Old ballfields. Soccerfields. Private yards. Schoolyards. Old racetracks. Beaches. Football fields. Old fields where homes used to set. Old street tear-outs. Old picnic areas. Under old bleachers. Drained lakes and swimming holes...whew!

darn that's gonna be a tough one. I'd have to figure out where all these places would be in the South

My wife & I actually were metal detecting Anne's Beach just south of Islamorada in the Florida Keys a few weeks ago. Found a few coins (3 LMC, 1 Roosie & 1 Jefferson nickel... not to mention the dozens of pull tabs & Corona bottle caps. Didn't strike it rich, but definitely had fun doing it
