Ok. So I'm would like to get rich off this. What's the best way to do so? I don't feel like spending lots of money on a metal detector and would like to spend as little as possible. Which model would you recommend for me? What's the point in spending a lot of money when I can just by a cheap one? I mean I could probably survive with a metal detector that just beeps when it comes across metal. I could survive without knowing how deep down it is. I don't think I would carry a ruler on me to help me pinpoint were it is in the dirt and just dig and try to find it. Like what added features are actually worth spending a lot of money for?
Anyone know how to make a metal detector? Please post a part list and a schematic diagram. I'm very cheap and know a bit about electrical engineering and would be fine just building one to save $$$.
Thanks for any advice for me a noob at metal detecting.

I am too new to this hobby, and I got this beauty for Christmas. It was purchased online from Walmart as receipt is on it. It was only like 90 bucks, so your plan to build your own will exceed that I bet in parts. I too appreciate cheapness equal to Ralphy's old man on Christmas story, via sh-rude as an Arab trader, lol. But here I say drop a C note and it may pay for itself on first find.... This is the bounty hunter so it must be good lol. Any ideas where to start looking? I live in east T.N., so civil war sites must be thick in my area.... Any ideas much appreciated as well....

If you want a cheap metal detector, get one. You will dig up a lot of pull tabs and bottle caps, but it will beep for gold too.
If you want the metal detector that the pros use, well, you'll have to ask a pro. :) But some are very advanced, you can set them to only go off for certain metals, etc.
Which one you want depends on how determined you are. You're not going to get rich, but you'll have a lot of fun!

JerseyBen & Roscue2, greenprint is always trolling. Okay, if not trolling his posts usually are related to a get rich quick scam.
You can probably find the schematics to build a metal detector at the Library. I believe there is a blueprint in one the the Treasure Hunters Manual by von Muller (I don't have a copy handy and I am going off memory here).
Your best bet is probably going to get one used at a pawn shop. I have seen them there before. Mass production has brought the prices down so much I am not sure if you could build one as easily/cheaply as it is to buy one. Most of the custom ones I've seen build are larger coil models, where the coil hangs off a harness around the shoulders and encircles the feet. Probably not what you want.
If you are looking for rings (which you should be if you want to get any money) you are going to have to hit populated areas, parks, beaches, etc.
You should get a detector that can at least discriminate out iron, because you will soon learn how much *junk* is all around the ground we walk on.
I have found a bunch of relics, a lot of modern change, a couple of non-PM rings, a silver necklace and a silver ring. No gold rings yet.
Unless you find a rare trade token or some key date coin, or a gold class ring you are probably not going to get a lot of return on it.

Not worth the time or effort. All the spots have been pounded to death. Have you considered privy digging?

Privy digging! Is that something that you do? I'm a bottle collector, I need to get out and try that...

It is worth it Staat25, but the idea you will get rich off of it is ludicrous. If you stay with the hobby you will eventually pay off your equipment, but will probably never make any money. HH and GL

I have friends that have dug many, many old coins including key dates (1916 D merc, 1877 IH, etc.) that they have sold for lots of money. It's entirely possible to dig a thousand dollars worth of clad in a season. I've dug several hundred silver and old coins in just four years of detecting. You get out what you put in.

I did over $900.00 last year alone. That included all of the coins, silver and jewelry (gold/silver etc.)Also found my first meteorite. I used a $100.00 metal detector so since then all in all have paid for it more than 10 times over. Not rich, but richer :)Plus it's always fun.

Satts25: "Worth it" as it relates to what, exactly? Is ANYTHING worth it? It is all in the eye of the do-er and if something isn't "worth it" then you wouldn't be engaged in that activity in the first place.

Even if you get a $1,000 of clad, if you spent more than 137.93 hours metal detecting than you are just making minimum wage. While you may get lucky with silver and key date cois, part of it depends on what part of the country you in.
In Idaho, were are in the situation be being one of the last parts of the country to be settled. That imediantly cuts down of the age of coins you find. We also experienced a lot of coinage shortages early on and into the middle years, forcing people to barter or tally accounts in other ways.
You do have the opporturnity to find low mintage tokens, and I know people who have found one of a kind tokens, but those can be hard to sell. You can do a lot of gold nugget detecting though. Remember, it is a hobby at the end of the day, but there are some people who get lucky.
