I just spent an enjoyable hour or so sifting through a Spanish dealer's (Lucernae) offerings. Since this is my first plunge in ancient coins, I stayed under 5 bucks per coin and bought what appealed to my eye and sense of art. Once they arrive, I'll photograph them to the best of my ability and post them for some much needed critique.
Off to the land of nod, but wanted to check in with my new friends and let you know what I've been up to.
Does anyone know this dealer and if so are they some of the good guys?

Bing and I where talking about that seller, he had good things to say about the speed of shipment from Spain to the US, and I trust Bing whole heartedly.

In my experieces bottom feeding... I have done best in the $100-250 range. Getting nice Greek tets with minor defects (character) that would ordinarly command a price 10 fold. My avatar for example $150 fetches a price of $750-$1250 based on recent listings.

Thanks for response, Ancientnoob. I'm sure your range holds a great deal more interesting wares. However that's a bit rich for my blood since that's my coin budget for at least a month. Perhaps though I should think more about quality rather than quantity and I'm sure I will as I learn more. As I said, this is my first purchase of ancient coins with the exception of the classic ebay ripoff of unsearched, uncleaned coins. I ended up with a couple of dozen pieces of ancient scrap metal which I may melt and recast a bauble.

Lucernae is not particularly low priced especially when you add postage from Spain. He starts many coins at $.99 but only the very low end will stay under $5. He does provide good service. I only have a handful of his coins.

Lucernae has been a reliable seller for me. In his "make an offer" sales, he will entertain reasonable offers and his shipments never seem to take too long considering it is coming from Spain. I'll be interested in what you purchased. Good luck.

my last batch I posted came from that guy, service was good....can't complain. shipping is high from spain, BUT, its a flat rate...i got 6 coins shipped for the same price as one, registered mail for him...i don't blame him, i'd only ship that way internationally also. i'd buy from him again.

I just realized I can post ebay listings. So here are a couple of my coins from Lucernae. The first one I like the structure on the reverse. Is this a camp gate or a tower? I'm tending toward tower. I think I may be able to clean this a bit and improve it using techniques described elsewhere on this amazing site. For two bucks, I can afford it. I bought 6 coins and they charge $6.00 shipping for the whole order. Shipping from southern Spain for a buck a coin is cheap. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lucernae-In...p=true&rt=ncThis next one is the most expensive at $7.05. I was drawn to it because of the warrior(?) on reverse. I'm looking forward to researching these coins as a way to learn the process and more history. Life is good. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lucernae-At...p=true&rt=nc

The Theodosius looks pretty nice, especially for the price.

I've bought 5 coins from Lucernae--every one I bought more for eye appeal than for a bargain. Happy with everything I bought from him. Since he combines shipping, it offsets the cost.

Thanks, Bling. This coin spoke to me for some reason. I was wrong to call the Emperor just a warrior. I just finished reading a piece critiquing and telling the tale of Gilgamesh along with a whole lot of in depth research written by Zecharia Sitchen. In the book he describes the image of the Emperor from his ancient alien theories. I didn't see this in the first study of the Theodosius, but I do clearly now. Perhaps that's the reason the coin spoke to me.
I'm definitely in the ancient coin realm full bore now. I still like my shiny modern proofs (I'm a crow at heart, you know "oh, shiny things")but every ancient coin holds the key to several interesting stories.

I said intuition played a large role in choosing this coin. I'm an army vet and still have some warrior in me. I'm looking forward to learning "Theo"s story.
