This follows on from a discussion in the following thread, we were getting off topic but this coin interested me so I decided to start a new thread hoping to get some responses:

Failed to sell on ebay last night for £59.00.

Fake-But-What-Is-It-Meant-To-Be,-If-Anything? Fake-But-What-Is-It-Meant-To-Be,-If-Anything?

What is it meant to be and what is the meaning of 'HERODES'?

SEPTIMIVS HERODES - FIDES MILITVM

After a lot of Googling I found this in Spanish:

Was I wrong to discount it as a fake so quickly? Confused

Outwardly the coin looks real and I'm basing this only on the strike because from the picture it doesn't look cast. But I have never seen or heard of this person. If it is real this would be an extremely rare coin. More knowledgeable person than I will have to answer that question.

The style looks modern and seems to attempt to copy the style of Probus. I think it is a modern fantasy piece purporting to be Lucius Septimius Herod, the "senator and chief of Tadmor", the son of Vaballathus.

Both coins have are from an identical die pair.

After a lot more Googling I believe the above coin (on the Spanish site) was bought from a Greek seller on ebay in August 2010 for $13US.

The item title was 'SEPTIMIVS HERODES AE antoninianus ** PROBABLY COPY **'

From feedback the seller looks honest and even described the item as probably fake.

Although very similar its difficult to say they are a die match from the pictures available.

I'm more than happy to bow to your experience on this, my head hurts from looking at the pics

Some additional pics of the same Spanish owned coin here:
