Was wondering if anyone had any ideas about the nature of this coin. Some doubling can be seen in LIBERTY on the obverse, and the reverse shows what appears to be melting of the copper layer, almost like wax. I'm inclined to think this is a mint issue, especially due to the doubling. However, others might have other ideas. Thanks.

Don't think it's a mint issue. Looks like acid damage on the reverse and a plating issue on the obverse to me.

Looks like some type of mad scientist experiment done on that coin. Make sure you handle that thing with gloves in case it is radio active. Reverse looks like something out of a horror movie. If that came from our mint, they have now a CENTS of humor. It is odd though that the Liberty is so noticably doubled and not a machine double but an actual doubling. With the rims damaged the way they are, this is definitely post mint damage.

Maineman750....why not MAD on the obverse? Not trying to make something out of nothing, but it appears to be similar to a MAD strike.

just carl......what's the difference between a Machine Doubling and an actual doubling>

Regarding the mad scientist suggestion, which I don't discount, I've got some HCl and blow torch and see if I can duplicate the reverse. Couldn't it (the reverse) be some kind of planchet error?

The coin has been smashed and mutilated, PMD. The doubling on LIBERTY is a possible indicator that this was an attempt to make a fake doubled die coin using a soft die applied to the obverse while the reverse sustained significant damage from the impact on a rough surface. Regardless of the cause, the mangled rims and rough reverse are indicators of PMD.
