I bought an MS-70 1975-D nickel a few months ago at a coin show for $1. I have been doing some research, and cannot find a nickel like mine for sale anywhere. I couldn't even find a listing on ebay for one! I'm not sure if this is because it is super rare or as common as dirt. Can anybody help me out here?

An MS-70 is pretty high. My first question is who graded the coin? Is it in a slab? Is there a company name?

It may just be graded by a basement slabber. Do you have pictures?

I guess it depends on which grading company graded it. PCGS hasn't graded any 1975 Nickels at MS70 according to their population report. I would suspect you have a MS70 Nickel from a lesser known grading company.

Pics?

No pictures right now, but it was graded by SGS. It has a hologram on the back and everything- seems legit. No evidence of tampering, etc. Looks like full steps, too.

99.9 percent of coins graded by SGS get the 70 label. Their grades mean nothing. It may be a nice nickel that would grade well but its basically just a raw 75-d nickel in that holder.

PCGS, NGC, ANACS and ICG are the only current grading companies that are reputable that are in existence right now.

Does anyone have a population report for SGS 1975-D nickels? That would help us figure it out.

Their website provides very little information

Here's a previous thread about Star Grading Services. It doesn't sound very good.

Upon close inspection, I do see minor contact marks on the front and back. Nothing large or distracting, but enough to knock it down a few grades at PCGS. It is still a nice coin, and does have full (or close to full) steps and nice toning. I'll try to get some pictures up later.

Theres no need to check that it doesn't mean anything. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but you only paid a dollar so I wouldnt worry about it thats not a bad price if it is uncirculated

SGS is essentially a self-slabber, i.e. a dealer putting his own inventory in clamshell holders. It is not a real TPG so they do not have pop reports.

You have learned a hard but cheap lesson, and that is NOT to buy SGS graded coins. Take a look on ebay and you will see that nearly every single one in an SGS slab is graded MS or PF 70. If you confront them about it they will tell you that they have had over 50 years experience in the business and are better than PCGS or NGC at what they do.

...and if you sell it on ebay you have to list it as a raw coin without a grade attached

If you do buy a coin in an SGS slab, do NOT pay the value of the grade on it. In no other case is it more true that you buy the coin, not the slab.
Rest in Peace
