I'll be going through these Lincoln pennies (5000 plus is such a big number) for the next 2 months. This is the latest coin. I had found this one and placed it aside for pictures when I had read in another thread about a 'cracked skull' LWC. I thought to myself: "I have one of those too." I never knew they had a name but thanks to the CCF I got another education.

One more thing. There appears to be an indentation on the lower left reverse next to the wheat. It has no affect on the obverse. Is this a die error too?

Show & Tell.

I pulled quite a few 1955 cracked skulls from circulation when I roll searched in the early seventies. I don't recall seeing one with that severe of a die crack, though. Not sure what's happening on the reverse. Nice coin all the same! It brings back memories.

Major die crack or maybe a lamination? Nice.

dave700x,

I believe 1955 was the year of the 'cracked skull.' So far I have found two but the other one only had a small die crack. There were around 100 1955 Lincoln's. I was really hoping for a doubled die.
Rest in Peace

From what I recall (I haven't looked at mine in years)all mine have a single line/ crack and did not extend vertically like your coin pictured. You may have an example of the terminal die state?

Guys this is not a planchet lamination but a die lamination. If the lamination is still on the die the flat surface will be depressed, but raised if the lamination splits from the die. Alan Herbert has a nice discussion on this in his Price Guide to Mint Errors (p157). Yours is a nice example.
