I finally decided to shell out the $20 for a 1970 D to finish off my Kennedy set, then later the same day in a different coin store, found another 1970 D for less than $10. when I got home and was looking closely to decide which one to keep for my collection I noticed that there are 5's and S's in his hair. This is a coin that has never seen circulation, and has no reason to see circulation as there were no business strikes minted.....so, I'm confident that it wasn't sitting on someones shop bench and some random letters and numbers fell on it....it's all very strange - several coin dealers say they think it's cool, and probably valuable, but never heard about this or seen it.....what do y'all think?

Can we see a pic without all the circles? They're very distracting.

Maybe dropped letters?

Just Machine Doubling and circulation damage, sorry.

I'm not saying HelzelsCoins is wrong but I've never seen Machine Doubling like that. The 'B' is actually 'tripled'. I've never heard of machine tripling :)

I think it looks like tripling also. And I can't imagine this type of thing happening in circulation - this coin is only available in a special set, it's 40% silver, none were produced for circulation....it's in great shape, clearly the previous owner took good care of it and had it protected.....

Let's keep this conversation going - get some more opinions, thoughts,etc...

The hair is affected by contact marks which can indeed be found on Mint Set coins. There is some Machine Doubling there but I am betting that you are using a USB microscope with multiple LEDs which can create an exaggerated appearance of doubling.
