Count the stars on the 1795 Dollar. There are fifteen and not thirteen. What gives?
Vermont and Kentucky!
Vermont joined the Union June 25, 1788.
Kentucky joined the Union June 1, 1792.
So, 15 stars in 1795.
By 1798, it was decided to use only 13 stars for the original 13 colonies.
And 13 stars it remained into the early years of the 20th century.
Now on to the gold $20 piece.

From 1907 to 1911, there were 46 stars around the obverse.
In 1912, there were 48. What gives?
Well, New Mexico and Arizona!
New Mexico joined the Union Jan. 6, 1912.
Arizona joined the Union Feb. 14, 1912.
I wonder. How many coin collectors know this?
