what happened to the rim? in this grade, less the rim details, a fine collectors coin for those with deep pockets & the $750 to spend on this but alas, I am a hundred dollar guy and I won't complain, its sweet to me

bringing this back to the top of the thread. I'd love some insight and opinion from the veteran experts who might talk about what the rim damage is about.

jeweler? at the mint? PMD? any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

this coin has some nice detail to it and I know it would wind up "genuine/not gradable" even though its a sweet AU detail.

I'm having a bit of a problem with this one. It seems to me it's PMD - an impact on the obverse displaced metal outwards. The problem is, I have a hard time imagining an impact hard enough to displace metal without affecting the corresponding reverse or anything else on the coin.

A clip probably shouldn't show that way on the reverse - I'd expect the denticles to be less-sharp, and there's no Blakesley Effect (not necessarily definitive).

Odd coin.

thank you Dave...i share all of your sentiments...I'm thinking it was forced under whatever affixed it to the jewelry it adorned...if I head south soon I'll reach out and you can handle this one if you like...

I dunno. A jewelery piece wouldn't need enough clamping force to displace metal, and I'd think that you'd see similar/equal damage on both sides. It obviously wasn't soldered. Curious coin.

Tough call. I think the consensus - once we get some more eyes in here - is going to be "PMD."

I agree with PMD. It also appears the eight o'clock position on the reverse is damaged.

Great details though! I think it will still shine in any album!

What a shame. Great tone in the field of the obverse. I've been racking my brain trying to imagine what could damage a coin this way.

Unless you plan to sell it soon, I wouldn't spend the money on TPG.

The damage does appear to be PMD and it's a shame because the coin has great details remaining. Maybe it was squeezed by a pair of pliers? It's also possible someone tried to clamp it into a piece of jewelry and failed. Whatever happened did leave significant damage but this coin is still quite valuable.

Problem-free this piece would be worth close to $1,000. As-is it should bring at least 1/3 of that or about $300.

i paid $100 for it...i just wanted to fill the hole in my Whitman Small Type Folder which I am trying to make an all AU/UNC album...its barley noticeable when it sits in the folder yet it looks like such a nice AU example in the details and beautifully toned original surfaces...

i truly appreciate all of you taking the time as always...i guess it'll be a mystery piece of damage that we can ponder

You got a good deal. This is a perfect example for an album or holder that hides a bit of the rims. I thought of the old style PCGS holders that cover half the rim when I saw your coin.

Getting 80% off retail price for rim damage is great!
