Someone lost a container of certified coins, currency and related valuables in the Roswell, GA area in October.

Good samaritans found the container and turned it over to authorities.

To date, no one has come forward to report lost valuables or to claim the treasure.

More details can be found in an article about the found treasure in the North Fulton paper. (Search web using "Treasure chest found in roadway in Roswell")

Please contact Detective Dana DeWeese at the Roswell Police Department, 770-640-4100, if you have any information that can help him find the owner.

I can't believe the owner hasn't come forward to claim it... It's not like dropping a $20 on the sidewalk... That is a lot of money.. Makes me wonder why he/she wasn't come forward to claim it...

GACS, just a thought--are any of those certified coins on a rarity level where the cert # could be looked up and the owner found? Even if a coin traded hands privately and the information was not updated, it seems like John Smith would know he sold his coin to Jane Doe and could contact her.

Some additional notes...

The detective has intentionally not shared a lot of information about the coins.

He did say that he contacted the company listed on several of the coin holders. They were either unable or unwilling to help.

There could be a criminal association with the valuables where the owner never comes forward.

But, it could also be these valuables were lost by someone just passing through the area.

The outer container was expensive and included special characteristics, per the detective.

The lost container and valuables could be the person's equivalent of "life savings hidden in a mattress."

There is a time limit on the search for the owner.

If the owner does not come forward within 90 days, the valuables will go to the finders.

The 90 days are up in January.

This strikes me as odd. Don't know why.

It really isn't that odd. A TPG doesn't want to be sued for giving out someones personal information.

Yes I know it is a detective/police dept asking, but there is no way to get a court order to get that information. A judge would never approve it.

Well, here's a thought then, a polite request that the TPG send word to their last known (by TPG) owner that their coins have been found and are in possession of the Roswell GA P.D.

Yeah, Argentum's solution seems the reasonable one. "Jane Doe, we have you on record as being the last owner of piece XXYYZZ, which was lost at a coin show and turned in. Roswell police want to contact you to have you confirm ownership. Here's their contact information. May we pass yours on to them?"

It's a long shot but have the TPG Registries been checked to see if any of the found coins are listed there.

Conder you and I were thinking the same thing, I also thought about searching the Registry's and even Heritage to see if maybe just 1 of the coins were bought there and if it was it may lead you to the rightful owner also

Edit: I just read the article and there are some higher priced coins found even if common date so someone definitely is missing them, they just may not know they were found and turned in and just think they are gone forever

Quote:
there was a coin show in Marietta the same day the box was found, and the owner may have attended. DeWeese is concerned also that the box may have been stolen.

This is a definite possibility or they fell out somehow like the dealer a flat tire or something and left the box sitting there after he cleared the trunk to get the spare out and either didn't realize it was left and found or it could have been stolen but either way it seems the dealer or whomever owned the coins would be missing them

Edit#2: I just read the story from Fox19 and they said just one of the coins was valued at $20,000.00

Either the owner figures they were lost forever or they were stolen. But I would think the police would be able to figure out whether they were stolen or not.
