While finishing up my Christmas shopping, I picked up two, uh, unique Proof Sets from two different dealer's bargain bins.

First: I couldn't turn down this "complete" 2003 Clad Proof Set for only $2.95!

("complete" meaning every hole in this holder is filled!)

Second: A 2012-S Clad Proof Quarter Set in a nice Whitman frosty holder, for $10

The problem: You may have noticed this Whitman holder has six holes!
It looked a bit odd as it was, with the five Proofs and an un-punched extra hole in the bottom row center.
When I got home, I popped out the sixth hole and added a 2012-S Hawaii Volcanos circulation finish Quarter.

Nice looking proof sets. I've got a thing for proof sets as well. Something about a set of coins sealed at the mint and then turned loose in the wild. I don't know if any of mine will ever be worth much, but they're sure fun to collect.

To dealers who crack them, then put the leftovers in new holders...

Most likely, dealer #1 cracked a 2003 Set for Quarters and the Sacagawea, stuck the rest in a used Capital holder and voila.

The odd one would be dealer #2. I would think they could sell a Quarter lens from a cracked 2012 Set. Then again, maybe they were trying to sell more of those Whitman holders they had two full boxes of...

I would be saying someone at dealer #1 had a twisted sense of humor, but Whitman is making six-hole holders for a series that has five designs per year...
