I see from the Red Book that Mint Uncirculated coin sets since 2005 have a satin finish instead of a normal mint luster. (It looks to me that the 2005 Kennedy in the Mint Set looks "shiny" like the 2004 and not "satiny" like the 2006, but that's a different topic).

I am considering adding circulated coins from 2005 forward to my collection. I have two sons born around that year so I was thinking about getting them started on this project, but I want albums that are at least archival quality. I don't mind blank albums that I print my own labels for. I use Dansco for everything else, and that's an option, but if someone has another idea for me to investigate I would appreciate hearing it.

Thanks for any opinions!

Blank albums are probably your best bet, intercept has some more modern albums as well but not sure if any would work.

If your going to be doing a lot of different sizes a 2X2 binder may be the best bet and give you the most freedom to add any type of coins you want

In 2011 they went back to normal, so only 2005 to 2010 are satin finish.

I went with this system after reading this thread. https://goccf.com/t/126346

I love it even more than my expensive albums.

Well now THAT is a very important and interesting bit of info! That narrows down the options considerably. Thanks!

Thanks again, jbuck, for that update. I have a 2011 Red Book and it only goes through 2010, so I didn't know the satin finish ended in 2010. That will make this a very fun project for my boys to collect circulated examples of 2005-2010 coins! I will probably make a Dansco album with penny, nickel and dime pages for the 6-year-old to noodle the small denominations, another album with the 2005-2010 quarters for my 8-year-old, and a third album with the halves and dollars for me to work on. I just love a mission!

Larsdog, how many boys do you have? I found some satin finish quarters on my change safe at work awhile back and have been trying to figure out what to do with them--I would be happy to send them each one with a note about how it was found (basically, "wow, how crazy! Where can you find coins like this?") to get them interested. They don't appear to be circulated (I found them mixed in with four rolls of old quarters and CAM proofs--and all I can say is, "gareodifj why wasn't I there when all five rolls were spent?!" because where you find 38 State Quarters in CAM in four rolls . . . there WAS a fifth, guaranteed), but they were technically found in circulation as they were on their way to being handed out as change--if someone else had worked my shift, they'd be scattered to the four winds by now.

Nina -

That's a very generous offer. My boys are only 6 and 8, so I doubt they could detect, much less appreciate, the difference between a satin finish and a circulation strike. I have all of the coins in satin finish mint sets, so it will be fun to get the NON satin finish coins from circulation.

I have ONE circulation proof that I found digging through LOTS of nickels. It's amazing that you found 34 non-circulation coins - and yes, too bad you missed that 5th roll!

Thanks again and Merry Christmas!

Not a problem! If there's any you think you'll have too much trouble with (and by "too much" I mean "Daaaad . . . this is borrrring, I can't find it" level of too much), let me know--I'll see if I can find 'em and send 'em for you to seed your pocket change with.
