This coin is smaller in deameter, and thinner, but still weighs 3 grams. It does not look like it has been ground down.

We used to rub them on the sidewalk (when we were kids)to remove the rim. Then it would work as a dime in a vending machine and we bought a Coke. The reason it doesn't look ground down is that circulation smoothed it off over the years.

I thought I would add some additional information. The coin is about 1/2 the thickness of a regular penny. But, it still weighs 3 grams like a regular penny.

The rims of the coin were removed which accounts for the perceived difference in thickness. Are you using a scale accurate to at least 0.1 grams?

I believe daniels was being 'tongue in cheek' with his comment. I've had some shirts and pants that had the dryer problem but never a coin. If I'm not mistaken, coins from the US Mint are permanent press.

Could also be an acid bath. I have a cent in similar condition and it was the result of an acid bath.

The fact that it is thinner makes it a good candidate for acid. On the other hand grind the diameter down to lose the rims and the coin will appear thinner because the distance field to field is less than the apparent thickness rim to rim.

I am eyeballing it. But I don't think it was anything that has been posted here. It would not weigh the same as other pennies if a portion was removed by acid or gringing

A normal copper cent weighs 3.1 g...and then there is some room for variance, plus we don't know how accurate your scales are.

I have weighed other pennies on my scale and they weigh 3 grams. This penny is only about half the thickness of a regular penny. If half was removed it would not weigh 3 grams. But I know do not have the experience that people on here have. So I am probably barking up the wrong tree.
