That obverse has beads and denticles by the look of it. Is there a chance a finished cent got re struck into a nickel?

I do see what you mean. However, I don't think that would be the case here. If so, shouldn't there be elements of the maple leaf design on the reverse?

it seems to be a copper planchet mixed into the nickel hopper, and a copper nickel was struck.

This coin was struck twice. First, as a normal 1-cent coin, then, struck by dies for the 5-cent coin. The high pressure to strike the pure nickel 5-cent planchets would have almost obliterated the original 1-cent design... Note I said almost. The obverse has the clues. 1) denticles, where there should be just beads, and 2) look in the fields behind the Queen's hair and neck - you can see the curved ADA of CANADA, from the reverse of the original 1-cent strike. Lastly, I know the owner of this coin, I can confidently say he is definitely not a photoshop wizard... Very nice coin Mikey...

I didn't even see the ADA on the obverse. Good eye SPP. And another nice "pickle" or was it "nenny"?

SPP is probably 100% correct about being struck twice... I used one of my programs and asked it to place pink colour at the high spots, and if you look where the arrows are pointing, that may be parst of the penny relief....Just a thought.

There is no doubt about the coin being double struck. I am thrilled SPP caught on as did Windchild and Bm. Look for what is there, not what you expect to see.

Probably way more impressive, with more subtle clues, in hand...

Not really. But once you see the few tell tales of the 1 cent strike, makes it rather special.

Can you make out the date of the 1 cent strike ?
