I'm thinking about purchasing this Trade dollar from someone near me (not offline) and I just wanted to run it by the family for input on grade and what I should offer for a price? The coin is raw and knowing that they are highly faked I wanted to make sure before I bought my first Trade dollar... I know the 1874-s is a common date/mm but I wanted to ask you all about our opinions on authentic or fake (looks real to me), estimated grade and whether its been cleaned or not? As well as what I should offer for it? (Unfortunately I can only upload one photo per day with my phone... So I can only put one side of the coin up.... I'll post the other tomorrow... Such a pain in the... !!)

Sadly , there are so many fake Trade dollars out there ...I wouldn't buy one unless its graded by professional third party (ie: PCGS,ANACS,NGC) good luck!

Looks like an very nice authentic Trade dollar somewhere in the AU range to my novice eye. Looks like there are some light scratches on the left below liberty's arm ... would need better pictures to give a better opinion on the grade and if cleaning has occured. Still I agree that a slabbed example is worth the premium since there are so many fakes out there.

My only advice would be to buy one slabbed because of the counterfeiting that happens with these. I personally would pass and purchase one that was authenticated by a TPG.

Or, make a deal that includes your commitment to send the coin to ANACS for authentication and the seller's commitment to refund your money AND the grading fee if it comes back "questionable authenticity".

Here's the reverse... (Sorry, it's such a pain to be able to only do one photo a day) Anyways... I totally agree, definitely a risk in buying Un-slabbed Trade dollars... But this one looked nice and was close to home, no Internet sale so I can actually check the coin out with my 10x loupe prior to buying. Also the slabbed examples in this grade (estimate) go for a bit these days. Anyways the guy brought it to a coin store and the owner said there is nothing that would make him believe it was a fake, but then again who's to say he'd even know... I guess I have no reason to doubt him but its still risky... I think I can get this coin for under $150... Which seems ok to me... I'd definitely love to make a deal where I could send it in for slabbing and get my money back if fake but I don't know if he'll be up for that, definitly worth a try! That's why I was asking the advise of the people here, lots of you know way more than me, and with Trade dollars I'm sure you all know more than I do so any further advise would be greatly appreciated! I don't think I'd say AU... The reverse is a bit worn, I'd say VF-EF, but again, you all know better than me! I'm getting some better/detailed pics of it tonight, so I'll post another tomorrow.

Unfortunately the reverse looks harshly cleaned from these pictures.

I would pass on this coin. When I saw the obverse picture, I was a bit uneasy but it only got worse when I saw the reverse picture. The details on the reverse looks a bit crude. Judging by the scrolls, it looks like a type 1 obverse. The arrowhead on the reverse appears to end directly over the 2 which would make it a type 2 reverse. From what I have read here on this forum and elsewhere, they only used a type 1 obverse and type 1 reverse in 1874.

your absolutely right D0ubl3Eagle, if does have a obverse 1 & reverse 2, and as you said none from 1874 should. Thank you so much! So definitely a fake, this is why I always ask here first! I learn new things daily! So again thanks a lot! Now I'll be better educated on my quest!
