I have a bunch of low grade wheat pennies and was wondering if storing them in a glass jar would be a good way to store them. I was planning on adding a desiccant to remove any moisture and place them in a dry place. Could this ruin the coins?
Thanks

Hey, good question. I've been wondering about the best way to store my coins as well. Someone who knows something should answer eventually :)

Might as well just place them all in a can, box or bury in a hole somewhere. Didn't mean to sound silly but just placing coins in a jar is so far from good or a source of preservation that almost anything else is just as good.
Regardless of their value, placing cois in a jar where they can bang around together and scratch each othere is just not good. Placing any moisture absorbing item could be dangerous. Those things can only absorb just so much and then become useless. And when wet, those things could actually create damage to coins.
For a method of storing low valued coins most coin dealers sell those plastic rolls. They are available on line or at most coin stores and will protect coins much better.

I agree that the best way to store these is in rolls. That keeps the coins from scratching each other. At the very least get some paper rollers from the bank. An added benifit is that you can organize them easier. All that being said, I've got a few canvas mint bags full of wheaties.

Regardless of how you store them desiccant is good to have in your safe, tub, or box with your collection. The kind that you can 'recharge' or dry out in the oven is best. They usually change colors when they need recharged.

You might want to consider clear plastic coin tubes. I just picked up a bunch of these for storing the sorts of coins you're describing: coins I want to keep but don't quite seem to be worth a 2X2. The tubes were about 75 cents each.
