Just got to be thankful that most of us here (I assume) have it a whole lot easier.

Hello,

I wonder if any of the children have thought of all of the nonmagnetic coins (silver etc.) that can still be retrieved by using a snorkel and mask?

Just a thought.

My heart goes out to the poor children of the world. Thank you for the reality check, thai-vic. (When I was a young boy, my father died, and we were a very, very poor family of five.)

Although I didn't lose either parent until later on in life I know what you mean blackjack. As the old saying goes "We may have been poor but we were happy"!

I have been fortunate enough to spend some time on the beaches of India and it is amazing what you can find (including quite a lot of jewellery). I found quite a few 1 and 5 rupee coins with dates/mints that I kept and that was just beachcombing. I would also occassionaly see Indians with metal detectors there but, as you can imagine, that will be an expensive piece of equipment to most of them.

As for the urchins on the river banks I imagine the water is not the cleanest and I doubt they would spot a lot even with goggles. Also I don't see many of the traders/devotees tossing in old silver. The majority may be 'poor' but I assure you they are not stupid.

When people there found out I was interested in old Indian coins some hotel staff would turn up with the (usually small) collection of family silver. I would occassionally buy pieces, at a fair price, but some of them expected a lot more.

It would have been generous to call me an "urchin" when I was a child in New York City.
