I got interested in War Nickels after listening to my dads stories about marching across France a few of months after D Day. Anyway, I started working on several sets of War Nickels (certified, ms 66). I have two sets complete and several more that are short the 42P, 44P and 45P. I haven't found any from my local sources lately, so I have been searching ebay. ALL of the coins I have found have been grossly over priced, some by as much at two and three times. I have masde some fair market value offers but no takers. Am I missing something?

No patience is virtue, you will find them when you least expect them and at a decent price. Good Luck in you search though. We can always use that....yes

That happens on ebay when there's a lack of a certain coin on there. Without competition coins can get over priced since you don't have any other options. Then again it could also be that they don't really want to sell but will if someone accepts the price.

Maybe your suppliers were underpriced and now you're facing market price.

basebal21 what you're seeing is a result of ebay's no listing fee policy. If a seller get's his price-great. If not, it doesn't cost him anything.

I see it sometimes in the type of notes I collect. 2 or 3 will sell due to their particular rarity and a lot of sellers list similar notes with high prices trying to cash in on the short term popularity. Wait a month or two and just keep an eye out for appropriately priced coins. They generally will turn up when you least expect it and usually when your cash poor!

War Nickels are notoriously hard to find in good condition from my search, Missing 3 Unc examples from my Jefferson set. Its frustrating having multiple shops in the area. When I do seem to find one I need, It always seems to be higher than it should be

Which is why more people should go to coin shows if possible. At the ones by me War Nickels are as common as Wheat Cents. And many in MS grades. Now as to difficulty in finding a War coin of any kind, try finding coins minted during the Civil War.

I too find it difficult to come across MS examples of War Nickels. I have only a very few I would consider MS and I'm a nickel collector.

Just keep looking and you will find them. I do the same with Merc's and it takes time but the payoff is worth it.

I need to disagree with a few of you. I have recently been upgrading my Dansco Jefferson to all Bu/MS and including a lot with good steps, some with full steps. I had no problem finding War Nickles on ebay but I would like to know what price range you call an atrocious price? As bad to the bone said "patience is a virtue". I normally select one coin a day and search for that one only, if not you tend to get confused. Just spent 3 days looking for a nice 5 or more steps 47-S and finally got it [12.95 if your curious]. Don't forget to look in "Buy it Now" stuff also. Got a few full step coins off Teletrades Tuesday night no buyers fee auction relatively cheap but I'm having trouble bringing myself to cracking the slabs. Just looked at my receipts and most war nickles were in the price range of $10 to $15 for Gem BU and up and these War nickles are beautiful coins in MS/Bu. My opinions only edgman

I do like that policy even if it creates some listings like that. The 50 cents or whatever isn't much for big sellers but for casual sellers it makes it less appealing selling old stuff around the house lol

I don't collect your particular series, but it is quite common for many ebay lister's to shoot quite high as was stated in thread. If they get good, if not they re list. It is probably a matter of patience. Also, if any of the bid now 30 day sales have a "make offer", send an offer. This is assuming there is a population of certs to substantiate your opinion of the proper price. :-)
