I am taking some opinions on some nice new coins. I went to a new coin store here in town and the gentleman didn't have any ancients (surprise, surprise). the gentleman was rather friendly and wanted some brief schooling and asked me if I would bring in a couple of pieces to look. Strategically located half way between my home and my 1.5 mile commute to work so I said, sure. I brought him 2 Alex Tets one with straight legs and the other crossed legs, A Roman Republic Denarius, A Bactrian Tet, an Athens tet, and A Carthage coin, some Indian Punchmarks and some Greek Imperials. He outwardly seemed rather impressed and we chatted for about an hour, at the end of the day. He wanted to make me an offer on one of the pieces, but I declined, he was interested in a US Gold piece I had and he offered me full retail and I bit. So now I was considering reinvesting in a fine Ancient Coin. This is where you guys come in! I need some guidance before I spend. I usually will get what I feel but these are a little more pricey then I am used too. I have 3 coins...I am torn between... (sorry internet is intermittent right now Coin #1 Tetradrachm of Macedon Under Rome $250 A type I have wanted and consider one of the most beautiful Ancient coins. I was considering paying a little more for a better example but thought this one was priced well. 30mm+ and almost 17g Coin#2 Drachm of Seleukos I Nikator $309 seller special price Also A need type not in great condition but good enough for me. Ex-Seaver Collection Coin 3 Tetradrachm of Seleukos I Babylon mint 20mm 16ish grams $216 Help me choose! Edited by Ancientnoob 12/20/2012 10:22 am

Not type 3. The off-center seated figure would irritate forever.

I agree the off centered figure is a bit irritating...whats your feeling on type 1 or 2...I was considering holding out for a slightly better example of type 1- type 2 is the best price I could find.

Normally I would go with the larger of the two. I like big coins. The first coin is fairly common and show up often at sales. Coin 2 while smaller has a very interesting reverse that IMO is not common at all. I think I would go with #2.

OK now I am torn between 1 and 2 - Type one is large and awesome...Type 2 is very cool very small 3.4g but fits well with my East/ West Collection and all the peoples in between, I just find it difficult to spend that money on such a small coin...although the Pedigree is cool and the everyone loves fast elephants! Not to mention that the elephants where one of the terms of peace between Seleukos and the Indian Mauryan Emperor Chandragupta who he met and fought in the Ganges Valley. Seleukos was said to have been defeated in India, although reports are sketchy at best but what is known is that Seleukos returned to Babylon with 500 of Chandragupta's elephants and conceded huge swaths of land to India. Although the interpretation of what is considered "India" is debated.... The world according to Eratostene!
