I'm looking at Trade dollars for my type set. I'm thinking about getting one with chop marks as I believe that shows the coin was used in the China trade. Value wise does that make any difference. I just feel chop marked coins would have more character. But does is do anything for the value of the coin.
Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

Dennis

Chopmarks generally lessen the value of the coin because it is considered damage. But, a lot of collectors like chop marks for the very reason you describe. There is even a Chopmark club that specializes in collecting them. I have both and prefer the chopmarked ones and they are also cheaper. If you go with chopmarks for a 7070 album make sure they haven't been chopmarked so aggressively they won't fit in the album.

Jimjumper,
Would you recommend Dennis get a chopped mark dollar with the chops
in the field(s) rather than on the devices and lettering? To my thinking, that would be
an ideal goal. Both the history and an intact design together.

I think that is a great idea! Of course, I've also been a strong proponent of "1 coin is never enough" so I think maybe one of each would even be better. LOL! I would also be very cautious about making sure the coins are authentic. The Chinese have been faking these coins for years and have gotten very good at them. They will even make custom dates and proofs on demand.

That's a great idea. Pick one with chop marks in field. Might take more time to find the right one, but a lot of fun of this hobby is the thrill of the ch ASE

dma I also decided to go with a chop marked dollar for my type set. As you stated, it shows the coin actually circulated in the orient making it far more interesting. The chop mark does reduce the cash value of the coin but actually adds historical value.

Chopmarks generally will lower the value of a Trade dollar. However, you should also be aware of fake chopmarks placed upon counterfeit coins to make them easier to sell.

I was 50/50 on this and just bought a 78s without chop marks for my 7070. Maybe I will buy another one with chop marks because I agree they tell a cool story.
