Gorgeous, I am a sucker for large high grade silver! Curious, as I am a perpetual student of coins... Is this considered Sassanian Coinage or is this particular piece Pre-Reform Arab-Sassanian Coinage. Is this really the portrait of Khusru II or the governor of the region. I notice your coins in the 4-5 o'clock position has what appears to be Arabic or Persian. With what appears to be date/ mint on the center reverse (either side of the attendents) I dont believe that my coin of this ruler has these characteristics. Is this coin from the later period of this kings reign (during the Islamization (made up word) of the Persian Empire? Intriguing piece, I have been eyeballing a few of these late Sassanian coins.

The OP coin strikes me as mint ART year 14. I am far from literate in these. There is an ART year 13 here: http://www.grifterrec.com/coins/sas...khuII_5.htmlThere are so many mints and so many years on these that not finding an exact match means nothing. Also I am not comfortable regarding telling fakes from real since there are so many styles from so many mints and so many workers. I tend to assume that struck coins of reasonable fabric are real but that means I can be fooled easily. Most sellers of general ancients are not all that strong on these either so I'm unclear how to protect myself. I only have about 15 Sasanians. I might get into these more if I had a better book but I do not know what that is or if it exists.

I think the obverse word outside the margin at 4:00-5:00 is "good". It is not always on coins of Khusru II, but it is still common. -- Warren

For the record, and to limit any confusion, by asking about the obverse script, I was in no way suggesting the coin was a forgery. I was wondering if the script has a mint or chronological reference. Sorry. I think the coin is absolutly stunning.

Still cant get over how phat that coin is-awesome in every respect, it is even superior to my superb example, you have absolutely no flatness in your concentric rings...so ridiculously awesome. For those of you who own this type of coin, you must agree it is one of the most awesome types to hold, struck in the finest silver, with such awesome style. For those of you who don't own one-get one!
