Hi all,

Newish collector getting started with a few project sets. I found this coin on ebay that looks tantalizing.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Newfoundlan...em484d7812cb

I've been warned about buying coins from China and have avoided in the past. This one is in a PCGS slab and seems to check out when I referenced the PCGS site. Anyone gotten burned with PCGS slabbed coins from here or is there a chance this is the real deal?

Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated.

The seller has excellent feedback, and why the seller is located in Hong Kong is anyones guess, maybe a International Dealer who just happens to be located in a area know for counterfeits...
If you like the coin I say go for it...

And it looks pretty good to me... trend is 550.00 so if you can get it for 50-60% its a deal...You could even have this one cross graded by ICCS for better resale value

I used to sell Canadian Paper Currency to a doctor in Hong Kong he wouldn't purchase coins if they were mailed he said coins very seldom get through the Chinese mail system the mail people steal the coins this is what he told me. I think I would request registered mail with insurance on your purchase if your the winner of big ticket items from China.
I used to send the notes airmail in a heavy paper Photo envelope that helped to disguise the money in the envelope and to help not get damaged.

Very nice looking coin.
I personally would go for it, as the seller has pretty good feedback.
Good luck, let us know if you win the bidding.

Hi Newfguy,

Welcome to the Forum... :) For what it's worth, here's a few things to consider re buying this coin.

Are you wanting to buy this particular coin to fill a spot in your collection... or are you motivated by thinking you might be able to get it at substantially below "book" value...?

Check out some of the links on this site to previous discussions re PCGS grading on Canada coins... sometimes they have a tendency to over-grade...

Have a good look at picture of coin in the listing... blow it up a bit and enhance the features to see the details better... there appears to be a bit of wear on surface of portrait, although difficult to tell because the photo is not in perfect focus...

Also, I myself would never buy a coin that has only the picture of one side and not the other...

Many of the wiser collectors on here will tell you to "buy the coin, not the holder"...

It is quite possible that this coin might only grade at MS-60 by ICCS... current full "Trends" list value is $225... keep in mind that for Newfoundland series coins, unless exceptional value or rarity, you can usually get ICCS graded Newf coins in most denominations at around 65% of Trends list value...

The 1917 dates in Newfoundland are some of the highest mintage and least rare dates in the series...

If you're stuck on finding a 1917 twenty-five cent piece there's a real nice one on ebay right now, (listing number is 32104198598), being sold by kuh_85 who's a respected contributor to the forum... the coin looks very nice, graded ICCS AU-58, on "Buy it Now" for $87 bucks... that's a good buy.

Take care, and Best Wishes for the Holiday Season!

Hi again Newfguy,

My apologies... made a mistake in looking up the line on "Trends" for this coin... next one up from the 1912 is the 1917 twenty five cent coin... the one you're looking at which is 1912 Twenty Cent lists in Trends at $400 in MS-60...

Sorry about any confusion... :)

However, the 1912 is not one of the lower mintage dates either... there's a decent looking ICCS EF-45 on ebay for $110...

take care,

Thanks for the info Cameron93 all good information for me to take in. I think I have a pretty good feel for grading the older newf silvers in the lower grades but start feeling out of my depth in the AU range.

"Buy the coin not the holder" is really the best advice.

Thanks again all and I am really glad I found these fourms. So much helpful info already from reading the older posts.
