It's pretty darn rare that I buy anything at a coin shop but I did so at a shop in California last weekend for this coin. I find it fairly difficult to find nicer 1870's (70-71-72) 2¢ pieces in nice circulated grades, much less one with a die break (on reverse through U-N-I...might be tough to see in photo)! Whaddy guys think this grades? Is this a desirable variety?

I have recently made the 2 Cent coins my passion in the hobby....
According to anything I can find, I would say, VG8 because the "WE" in the motto is weakly visible, however these coins are tricky and I am unsure of any weak strikes for that year. As far as the variety, I cannot find anything in my book. CCF member Nohope587 would be able to give you better info on it but he is in Columbia right now....

Very nice coin....Thanks for sharing...

Well, I agree that the coin is not sharply struck. The "WE" is definitely weak, but it's there (tough to see in the image, though). These coins are often graded by looking at a number of areas. The first place I look is the horizontal shield lines. Next, I look at the grains of wheat and the bow on the reverse.

This looks like a VF with a weak "we."
