Coins out the wazoo... 92 coins on christmas day + a very generous batch of 16 from Chrsmat from his culls pile (How some of these got there is beyond me). The nicest coins I have are both BEATA TRANQUILITAS - one left facing with a shield and spear and the other right facing with, I believe, an eagle tipped sceptre. Heres the first challenge, while I get cleaning arrangements sorted. I thought this was counterstamped 'T' - its actually the leg of a horse. I cant worke out how many were on here - but its pretty beaten up and have some BD. Width - 30mm. And,in other news, I have got a carausius (its in good condition, but its patina is a bit of an awful colour. All the brown turned out to be caked on mud!). The rest shall turn up later on in the day, but as a hint, the 12 coin batch had 11 5th century pieces in it!

Looks like more than one horse and there appears to be a center dimple so I thing it might be a Roman Provincial.

That center dimple cleaned up to be a big old break in the patina - ill take a picture and post it up. It appears to have writing along the bottom rather than round the edges.
Ive finished cleaning it, I'm worried about taking off more of the design. I need some verdicare too.

Okay, heres ol' Carausius. well, I hope its Carausius, I havent been able to get a full name off of it. It looks like him and the obverse legend suggest its him. Its not a PAX AVG! If I didnt know better, id have said MARS AVG. The obverse looked better with the crud: The reverse has made some good progress: And heres the two nicest BEATAs: (real nice detail on the celestial orb here):

Its definitely Carausius I think its a quite interesting one too, I said I thought it might be barbarous and while this is certainly still possible it would be very hard to say with much certainty in this case. I think the reverse could be VIRTVS AVG With it showing no mintmark or fieldmarks (uncommon for these) RIC attributes to either Rotomagus (France) or 'uncertain British mint'. I looked into this whole situation a few years ago but must admit most of the detail has since been forgotten, I'll offer what I can remember as a starting point Firstly I dont think your coin is from Rotomagus, style is wrong, I have seen the 'uncertain British mint' named as Camulodunum before but not sure I agree. I've also read a theory about another mint in the Bristol area. This is where the 'possible barbarous' thing comes in, was there indeed an unknown official mint somewhere or an unofficial mint making coins? Quote: The obverse looked better with the crud When it drys the detail may return.

Thanks for the input bobby - its probably Virtvs, but this guy is facing right and I couldnt get a match for it.
It could be mars advancing right with Virtvs - but its got no mintmark and nothing in the fields.
Oh and - worse comes to worst - I can reapply some crud.
IN OTHER NEWS - Got some nice large coins coming out of it - a nearly square septimus severus to boot. That horse coin has soldiers either side and someone (probably the emperor) riding. Ill be looking into it.

Ive started work cleaning the nicest beata by hand and the dirt and muck is just falling off - very satisfying. should have it polished off and done within 2 weeks. Tomorrow ill be working on what I think is a Severan sestertius with thick encrustation. The seller didnt pick this one out but I think there could be some good detail under the thick mud. preliminary cleaning showed that the mud cracks and falls off with moderate ease. Im quite worried that what's cracking off is patina and I'm removing all detail, but the big hole in the middle of the head means I'm not too worried about losing this one.

AND the next Identification challenge (I should start a points system really) is this 5th century bronze: Obverse I believe is N (unknown) AVG and the reverse is VICTORIA ROMANORVM AVGG.

2nd cull of the group - a pot labelled 'Low grade' was filled with things I wasnt sure about culling for any reason - a last chance saloon, if you will. These have been sorted - of 14 coins, 8 have been culled, 1 pronounced finished (and this doosy is getting its own post), 1 Oh-my-god-what-is-this-better-keep-that (and this doosy is getting its own post) and 4 coins are entering the regular pots.
