Well I unwrapped one of them today but posted the sellers photo before. I must be one of a few people in all of human history to unwrap one of these guys on Xmas morning... Here is my photo accompanied by my own measurements. Persia, Sassanian Empire Ardashir I (224-242 AD) Billon (Also described as Potin) Tetradrachm 25.6mm x 11.19g Ctesiphon mint Obverse: Pahlavi legend, "MaZDISN BaGi ARTaHShATER MaLKAN MaLKA AIRAN" (of the Worshipper of Mazda, the Divine Ardashir, King of Kings or Iran); cuirassed bust of Ardashir right with long beard, Parthian-style headdress with ear flaps; Reverse: Pahlavi legend, "NURA ZI ARTaHShaTR" (Fire of Ardashir), fire-altar without attendants ref: Göbl II/5 Coin 2...I have had for quite sometime and is very warn and yet still remains one of my favorites. I have posted it before but today I was experimenting with photographing the "hard to photograph" coins. This one was not really "hard" but the photo I often showed of this coin was very washed out. So here it is... Nero AR Tetradrachm of Antioch, Syria. Regnal year 8, Caesarian year 110 61/62 AD. 14.05g Obverse: NERWNOS KAISAROS SEBASTOU, laureate bust right, wearing aegis. Reverse: Eagle standing left on thunderbolt, palm branch before, H/IP behind. Ref: RPC4182 I do love those Tetradrachms, man! Feel free to comment, correct, add information and or put up a smiley all are encouraged and appreciate.

This one also is one of my favorites, it is chunky and of a famous ruler. The face was corroded by the thousands of years of the past, this made the photography difficult. Still I don't believe I have captured the full majestic beauty of the portrait but its is what I consider a major photographic upgrade Persia, Satrap of Caria Halicarnassus Mint AR Tetradrachm 23.6mm x 13.63g Maussollos 377-353 BC Obverse: 3/4 facing head of Apollo Reverse: Zeus? / Ba'al? Standing Right with Labrandus (Double Headed Axe) MAYSSOLL? REF: SNGCop 590

Lookin' good, A-Dawg!! (Merry Christmas) Sadly (but expectedly), I did not receive any ancient coins from my lovely wife ... but she did spoil me with several gifts, including a gorgeous new watch, several new colognes, plus she also filled my wine-rack with 20 various bottles of fine red wine (the chick absolutely rocks!!) => good job on the photos ... ummm, how was Nooborn's first Christmas?

I did some experimenting photographic this coin. The original image had a light obverse and an unappealing dark reverse. I reshot the photos and croped and resized the combined photos and I noticed distortion in the photo, when scaling from 6000 pixel width to around 600 pixles. So I resized each individually and the combined cropped and resized the lot with very good results...at least I am happy. I bought this coin a while back for a very very good price at a local coin show. The whole show had only 2 coins and I got them both! This and my Ptolemy Cleopatra VII tetradrachm. Demetrius I Soter (The Savior) 187-150 BC AR 29.5mm Tetradrachm, Antioch, Syria (15.17g) Obverse:Demetrius I Reverse: Tyche seated left, holding sceptre & cornucopiae; winged Tritoness supporting throne, two monograms to outer left, date in ex

Rhodes AR Didrachm (6.64g) 387-304 BC Obverse: 3/4 facing head of Helios Reverse: Hibiscus (ROSE) Monogram E ref: SG 5038 This coin Pic I messed up a while back and ended up being really small on screen in order to fit CCF size constraints. Using the same technique as the previous coin I shot this...

I was considering trying to use the "black" background...but I think I like this technique, it makes lighting a little difficult to get right without glare from outside light and the flash, but the shadow cast by the coin adds to the "depth" of the coin. I think you can more accurately measure the "chunkeyness" of each piece. To be honest I am having almost as much fun handling and photographing the coins as I do "collecting" them. Anyone else feel this way. I am also open to suggestions for improving my photos, (is there a critic out there?) I found the photographing of the Ardashir Billon exceptionally difficult. I took about 2 dozen pics of it, they kept wanting to come out a weird yellowish, grey color. Although in hand this coin looks really close to the current photo.

Yea it was expected my son always steels the show, you should have seen him at his great grandmothers party last night, he was the dream of all the ladies and the envy of all the guys, people were lining up just for a chance to touch his feet and hands. Smiling at everyone, the whole time.
