Well I decided to close out the year with two coins I have been hankering for for a while. I first saw coin one when it was posted by DVCollector and another from DougS....I picked this up from "my guy" at a very reasonable discount.

Indo-Greek Kingdom
Bactria, Asia

Menander I (165/55 - 130 BC)
AR Drachm 18 mm x 2.42 g
Obverse: Î'Î'ΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΩTHPOΣ ΜΕNANÎ"POY, Heroic bust of Menander left, holding spear and wearing helmet, diadem and aegis (sometimes described as Pallas).

Reverse: Karosthi inscription - Maharajasa tratarasa menadrasa, Athena, advancing right, brandishing thunderbolt in raised right hand and holding shield on left arm, monogram in the left field. Pushkalavati mint, chief workshop.

Seller's note: Struck on a large flan, rare this nice!

The second coin I got for half the price of the first one...I almost like it more. It has a very neat look to it, and I have a thing for Nike.

Antimachos I (168-160 BC)
AR Drachm 17 mm x 2.42 g
Obverse: BASILEW*S NIKYFOROU ANTIMAXOU, Nike walking left, holding branch, monogram before.
Reverse: Karoshti legend: Maharajasa jayadharasa Antimakasa, armed and uniformed King on horseback galloping right. Taxila mint, MACW 1674.
Sellers Note: These bilingual drachms were struck during Antimachos'' occupation of Gandhara and Taxila, ca.168-160 BC.

Yea as I was saying some of the other members really sparked my interest in this type of coinage. The coinage I think eerse legends. These coins helped the Brits descipher the Kharosthi script in the mid 19th century. That in itself is cool. I also fancy the Greek deities venerated on coinage so far from the homeland and so long after those very Greek folks fell out of power. You can find Corrupt Greek script on Kushan and Post Kushan coinage well into the 5th century AD. 800 years after the time of Alexander. I believe the art and symbolism is somewhat "inferior" to the coinage of the Greek lands in "Greece" and Asia Minor,in the 4-2nd centuries. The tets and Drachms are smaller the Gods are rendered in less majestic form, but for what they lack they make up for in some wild looking coins, fabulous and unique. It is one of my favorite series of coinage. I mean how cool is a heroic bust, Zeus with a radiant halo, or even Athena rocking the thunderbolt.
