Just a couple of Christmas gifts to myself (I'd have more coin gifts of course but I'm saving my cash for this kinda expensive coin). I don't know a whole lot about them; just thought it'd be neat to have a coin of the Pontius Pilate, and an Ottoman coin from the setting of one of my video games (early 16th century Constantinople). Plus, as a collector of Roman coins, I think it'd be cool to have a coin of the nation that finally extinguished the Roman Empire. It's of Sultan Bayezid II. Also, 2 questions about the prutah: for cataloging, would it be Judaean, or should I count it as Roman? Or even Greek (Wildwinds has him in this category)? And would the mint be Jerusalem? Ottoman Empire - Bayezid II (reigned 1481-1512) AR akce Constantinople mint, 12 mm Pontius Pilate AE Prutah (minted 30-31 AD) Obv: TIBEPIOY KAICAPOC, lituus (Augur's staff) Rev: LIZ or LIH within wreath 15 mm Edited by VisigothKing 12/25/2012 5:25 pm

Neat coins! I have been looking at some Ottoman coins of the same period! The Pilate is cool and these coins generally carry a premium in any condition, kudos to you. Now on to the issue of classification. I personally would consider it a Roman Provincial coin minted in Judea in the name of Tiberius. The legend is in Latin and names the Emperor. Good Xmas scores!

I picked up a silver akce for $5 a couple of years ago but I still need to fully attribute it. Bronze prutahs are a bit harder to come by, but they can be found. I have an example of a prutah of Valerius Gratus (AD 15-26), which would have circulated while Jesus was on Earth. Perhaps He would have been familiar with the coins of Valerius Gratus. Perhaps one of these could have been the Widow's Mite.
This would have been just before the time that Pontius Pilot flew aeroplanes!

You mean the legend is in Greek But yeah I don't see any reason not to put it as a Roman provincial. Thanks sel, now I have something else to be on the lookout for And the funny thing is, I think I saw a cheap one of him but I can't remember at all where online I saw it Thanks for the comments guys!

Not bad. I don't have a Pontius Pilate coin yet, but maybe in the future. I also don't have a Ottoman Empire coin either.
