I have never heard of a "Superbird" Washington quarter and especially hand engraved tail feathers. Someone please explain how or why the mint would hand engrave tail feathers! I know its an error coin but,!

"A later die state of the famous "Superbird" variety. The tail feathers were lapped and a mint worker added lines to the reverse die, presumably to conceal the lost definition."

Always fun to read about "famous" coins I've never heard of!

OK JerseyBen. Since it sold on Heritage for $1,086.88 the same coin is going off on Teletrade tonight. That's where I got this image from. Lets see what it brings then. So the Mint worker re-engraves the die and not the coin itself so that means there could be an unknown quantity still out there. I'm going back and recheck my '52 Washington's. Just when you thought you seen them all. This Forum is a "Treasure Trove" of knowledge. Someday I will find something about a coin you guys don't know about. Is there any other years that have this error you know of.

Love the "Superbird" designation.

Keep the posts coming.

Its got a PR designation so its a proof coin. Was it out of a proof set, probably. Think they only did sets back in those days. Has anyone ever seen one in MS/BU? By the way, its up to $400 on Teletrade at 4PM. Will get final numbers later tonight.

Just checked Teletrade and that coin only sold for $625. Since he bought it a week or two ago for $1068 with a buyers fee of app. $80 (8%)=$1168. That means this poor soul just lost app. $540 on his investment with this error coin. Hope he doesn't do those kind of investments to often! I'm sure the Forum can tell me why anyone in his right mind would make an investment like that type of error in a coin. You think at least it would have been CAC approved.

My opinions only

Some people like to "flip" coins; sometimes you make out on the plus side, sometimes you get your backside handed to you.

Not the same coin. Different serial numbers.
