Yeah I'm developing an affection for these coins and a deep appreciation for their rarity in a nice condition. Unfortunately, I do not have $5000 to shell out for a nice example of the small size. I saw the coin pictured below on ebay but the seller was asking $1000 for it. It is an 1819 Large 9 certified by PCGS as "Genuine XF Details Smoothed." Could this possibly be a problem-free coin that PCGS just was very strict about? It appears to me like a very nice example. What do you think a GOOD price would be for me to pay for this coin? I just sent him a message offering him $650 for it.   |

Here's a description of the coin from it's most recent auction appearance:1819 Capped Bust quarter. B-2. Rarity-3. Large 9. EF Details--Smoothed (PCGS). Description: Deep navy toning present in abundance on both sides, with a scattering of ticks and scratches noted under low magnification. A sharp example that was unaccountably whizzed and recolored, a shame actually, as the original surfaces were probably fine left exactly as they were. Coin sold for $617 I believe $700 would be a fair price for this coin |

I would advise against spending large sums of money on a problem coin that has been smoothed, whizzed, artificially toned or whatever. You are just begging for trouble down the road when you want to replace the coin or to sell the coin. If you see a nice, problem-free coin for $1,000 then I have to ask why you wouldn't buy that instead of risking $650 on wishful thinking?

I thought this thread might be the best place to gather the some more CBQ experts to opine on my 1831 quarter:   Please tell me what you think about its authenticity (or lack thereof) and worthiness to be sent into PCGS for both a grade AND attribution on the date. |

Where did you acquire the coin? It looks like a B-5 Large Letters RPD FS-301. The color is "off" as is the overall appearance but that could be the images.
The devices exhibit AU+ detail and yes, the coin requires expert in-hand authentication. I would not buy it as a raw coin with those images. An AU55 is a $1,000 coin. Wish I could be more concrete but I can't.

I'm more in the EF range, but I trust BH1964's attribution. Looks genuine to me.

If I could know more specifically what details are still unclear or absent with this initial endeavor, my efforts could focus more on additional closeup imagery, for instance, of any area(s) in question. Obviously, shooting out any coin to a TPG that later determines it to be fake is unproductive... Hopefully, with a second and more focused look, more meaningful will surface. |

It's been in my collection for several years and 'probably' came from either a local auction(as it, where is, with no warranty...) or from another individual personally selling his coins also w/o any assurance. |

I agree with BH's attribution as well. I see no reason to not think this CBQ is authentic. If it were my quarter I would send it in to a TPG. Even if it were to come back with a details grade you would still have a peace of mind that it is real. It's a nice looking quarter. Thanks for bring this thread back to the top. It is the first time I have read through it! |
