Those that own them, don't really want to sell them.
I have been looking for a VF-EF example and the ebay listings that are in this grade are all BIN at above numismedia FMV . Are they really this scarce?

Yes. Sorry.

Seriously, they seen genuinely few and far between. They saw a *lot* of circulation.

When you do find a high grade Capped Bust quarter without having been cleaned or damaged the premiums for them get up there quick.

Try Heritage or Collector's Corner. Capped Bust quarters are a great series and the large diameter pieces are tough to find at reasonable prices. The small diameter coins (1831-1838) are usually available at fair prices with some searching.

If you've never seen a 27.5mm CBQ, they are a sight to behold!

P.S. Here's an honest, attractive 1825/4/2 G04 for under $150. That's a fair price. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1825-4-2-BR...em35c124074c

Man, do they get up there in price quick.

BH1964 That looks like a descent .25 just trying to keep my standards up for my US Type Set. Would prefer to hold them in my hand vs. Online auctions but that would limit me way too much.

My 1834 Capped Bust quarter (PCGS VF35) is number five (behind my Seated dollars & Standing Liberty quarters) on the value list (non gold) in my slabbed 7070. She sure is nice type though!

I'm searching for a nice example for my type set (hopefully XF). The coin shops that I visit rarely get them in any condition.

Here is a F-15 that I was able to pick up.

I am in coin shops quite often and do not see many large quarters.

But here is one I picked up this past year, just in case Dansco decides to add them to the new 7070 that I hope comes out soon. (It sure would be nice to have a high grade one)

This small diameter CBQ is available for bidding on Heritage now. It's a PCGS OGH AU53 and will likely finish strong due to the CAC Gold sticker. This is one to love!

I picked this one up on ebay about four months ago for the "bargain" price of $129.99:

The seller's pictures were truly awful and I took a chance that fortunately paid off. The coin has probably been cleaned at some point, but it's still a beautiful coin.

Here's the one that it replaced (I think I paid around $80 for it a year or so ago):

Fascinating thread which I can relate to! The Capped Bust quarter was definetly a stopper for me while completing the 7070 Copper/Silver Coinage part of the album. Although I did not spend more than $80 for that particular coin, I settled for an unslabbed VF example that may not be problem free. By the way, I have not purchased any more coins since the Liberty $20 and still have 7 gold coins to go: Indian Dollar, Liberty 2.5, Liberty Half Eagle, Indian Half Eagle, Liberty Eagle, Indian Eagle, and the Saint Gaudens $20 piece (any suggestions as to how I should buy these coins on my budget?:) Also considering buying slabbed Type 2 and a three dollar piece to complete the traditional basic set. I have limited myself to a budget of $1000 a month starting January and will probably buy the coins in MS and slabbed (cracking them out is appealing, but not sure it's a great idea if I plan to sell my collection at some point.)

Are these large size quarters much rarer as a rule? I understand that they are more expensive, and aren't even given a seperate slot in the 7070. One day I might pick out a slabbed example at a coin show in the XF-AU range if I can find one I like for the right price. Interestingly, there are about 25 different affordable types that aren't included in the 7070.

The large size coins are much more scarce than their small size sisters and can cost significantly more than price guides suggest when attractive and problem-free. This is especially true for the "collector" grades of F-EF. These coins were used for decades without regard to damage and were then abused mightily by collectors for quite a while afterwards. If you need one for type I suggest that you be selective as they are always available, but you simply need to pay to buy one.

This thread is really amazing...I know of a dealer who has a 1831 large letter reverse that is loaded with eye appeal and is PCGS VF-25....I kind of laughed at the $250 ask price , and did not make an offer...that is over list price,, but, may not be out of reason from what I'm hearing here! What do you think?
